  • A. It is an enclosure into which you add your own hard drive. The capacity depends on the drive you choose to install. I was using a 1 terrabyte drive.

  • A. Tingle42, This does not have any GB. This is an enclosure only and you have to supply the SATA HD.

  • A. This is an enclosure. It doesn't have a drive in it. It makes an internal sata drive that you already have into an external one.

  • A. This is merely a hard drive enclosure, and not an actual hard drive. It doesn't have ANY storage space at all. The main purpose of the item is to allow you to take a hard drive out of an older desktop, and connect it to your laptop or a new desktop in order to retrieve the files and data from the hard drive. Essentially it converts your hard drives SATA connection to a more accessible USB connection. Hope this helps! Gruns

Hope you will forgive so many lengthy questions, but even at less than $20, I need to be sure I buy the right thing. So, first of all, it may seem obvious, but is the enclosure made of aluminum or merely of aluminum-painted plastic? Secondly, can anyone tell me if, after it has been up and running for a while, the drive tends to get noticeably hot? Overly hot? Due to shortage of space on the shelves containing my audio/video system, whichever enclosure I buy will be used in fairly tight quarters, along with my Mac-mini and a few additional external components (including a DL SuperBurner). Because of the way in which it is built, the Mac-mini dissipates its own heat fairly well, so I am not worried about it, specifically, but with each additional component I add on to the system, the heat level within the somewhat enclosed space steadily increases and I worry that it might actually get to be a problem. Since hits enclosure does not have a built-in fan, has anyone noted anything more than just minor issues with overheating? One last thing, I am looking for an enclosure that does not rattle around, so if anyone could address the question of noise- is it obvious when the unit is active- I would appreciate that, as well. (Last thing I want is to install a hard drive containing my movies, then find that the enclosure makes obvious noises each time I try to view one!)

  • A. Enclosure is aluminum. Finned outer body will help dissipate heat, but no forward vents or rear venting I would give it a couple inches around the case for safety measure. Seats well inside body with front and rear drive cushioning. I didn't notice it being noisy at all.

  • A. Yes it is made of aluminum, Use the stand with it and it'll be fine, this will prevent overheating from occuring, but I wouldn't leave it on 24/7. No rattling around either.

  • A. The enclosure is actually aluminum. Had it worked, it seemed as if it would have been stable and quiet -- a nice, tight fit.

  • A. It is made of very lightweight plastic. Haven't used it enough to know how hot it gets but the hard drive screws into the case so it can't rattle and I have not heard any noises coming from it at all.

  • A. The unit is made of aluminum. It does warm up, but doesn't get hot. Maybe it's because the aluminum helps dissipate the heat like a heat sink, I think. I have never had any problem with noise. For these reasons, I gave this unit 5 stars. I'm glad I bought it instead of the more expensive ones elsewhere.

  • A. MizzTree, This is made of aluminum with plastic end caps. I have this running all the time - 2 to 3 months now and have not noticed it to be the slightest bit hot. It does get warm though as expected considering there is no fan but by no means is it "hot." To you last question, there is not noise to this enclosure. Most of the time I have to feel it to make sure it is still running because of how quiet it is. Hope this helps.

I put 2 different 500GB hard drives in this and it was having a hard time handling it. I put in an 80GB drive and it picked it up no problems. I don't know if it's the drives (Western Digital) the size (500GB) or what but sometimes it would get to the point of just turning the unit off because it wouldn't show up under My Computer. I work in IT and couldn't figure out why this particular set of drives had such a hard time showing up. I put them in a 5 bay Sans Digital enclosure and I have not had any issues with them at all. I gave it 3 stars because it does actually work I am just not sure if someone would have any issues with larger sized drives.

My dell motherboard crashed and i needed to a way to get the info from the hard drive. This enclosure did the trick for a very inexpensive price. For a better price then newegg or tiger direct since there was no charge for site to store shipping!

My PC died from a power surge. It was too old to repair. This product brought the hard drive back to life. I ordered the wrong interface. I called Coolmax & they said, No problem we'll send you what you need & they did. No charge. The enclosure with the electronic componets included, allowed me to download all the pics I thought were lost & I can still use the hard drive for storage. Thanks CoolMax Support for going above & beyond the call of duty.

Customer has been confirmed to have purchased the item from Walmart.

My old Compaq desktop (with Windows Vista) could not boot. I decided to purchase a new Dell desktop tower (with Windows 8.1) instead of repairing the old Compaq desktop. I bought this Coolmax hard drive enclosure to retrieve the old files from my old hard drive inside the Compaq desktop. It is very easy to set up & use. I plugged in the power, connected the USB cable to the USB port. I can see the old files in the old hard drive. I copied & pasted the files I needed to the new hard drive in the Dell computer. I also can use the old hard drive as an external hard drive. It does not cost a lot for this device.
