I recognize that I would need to construct a connector block to replace the 8 D-cell batteries, but I am looking for longer term use of the light.

    • A. No. I was planning on powering with 12 volts and had to rethink the project. The 8 "D" cells are wired as two batteries of 6 volts each. The two banks are "wired ored" with diodes to power the LEDs Since the LEDs are low voltage devices, having a 12 volt source requires you step down to 6 volts and Coleman did not want to supply electronics. Even the brightness control is done with resistors! I have a step down switching supply on order so I can run on 12 volts efficiently.

    • A. Originally I was going to say 12v is 12v. Just need to wire it properly. I would include an inline fuse between the battery and lantern. BUT I believe it may be a 6v lantern with the batteries wired in parallel (6v & 6v) for a longer run time. I would call Coleman and ask if the lantern is a 6v or 12v device but I think you'll find it's 6v.

For the money this is a pretty good value. It has the same form factor as a regular Coleman lantern and it has a knob to adjust output to a fine degree, but the light output on high seemed pretty low. I think the reflector design could be better to boost the output. It is heavy with batteries and for the number of batteries, it does not really burn that long. I returned it and got a Rayovac lantern instead which is half the size, half the batteries, half the weight, burns much longer on high, is more versatile, and appears to be brighter even though it has fewer lumens (300 vs 390). Main benefits of the Coleman are the large knob to turn on and adjust the output (vs a small pushbutton switch) and it looks cool, like a traditional Coleman lantern.

This lantern far exceeded my expectations. The lumen output is excellent and does an excellent job lighting up any room in our house. After a five day power outage last year I won't be in the dark again. Only con is it eats batteries on high output. About 16 hours.

We got the Coleman Twin LED Lantern because the electric goes out often and we sometimes sit out on the back patio at night. Either way, this lantern is great. The light brightness is adjustable and twin LED tubes mean more light. If you don't use full power then the batteries last longer. Most of the time you don't need full power with this lantern. It is nice not to have to worry about kerosene or butane, since this lantern uses batteries. It is water resistant, so you can use it in the rain if needed. It come in very handy when your electric goes out. You just turn the nob and you have light without the heat of old kerosene lanterns. Coleman lanterns are good quality. There are many to chooses from. I am happy with this one.

A nice thing about this lantern is the variable dimmer control so you can set it as dim as a night light or dial it up to high -- which is something that LEDs can do that fluorescent bulbs can't. The light output is 390 lumens which sounds high, but consider for ordinary incandescent bulbs: 40W gives 500 lumens, 60W gives 705 lumens, 75W gives 1085 lumens (roughly). There are lots of lanterns rated with far less lumens and when you're out camping it's better to have a brighter light available if you should need it. The down side is that it needs 8 D batteries which is a lot and makes the lantern quite heavy.

I just got back from a fishing trip where we did a lot of night fishing... The lantern performed flawlessly and I really liked the way I could adjust the brightness. We fished 4 long nights and I didn't have to change the batteries once! Even though this lantern wouldn't get as bright as the fuel type, I was satisfied with the brightness. It doesn't get hot like the fuel type. This was a great purchase! I'll probably buy another one before the next fishing trip.
