    Great product for a buck.

I originally bought this case not realizing there was matches inside. I saw it and quickly thought to myself that my newly purchased rechargeable BRC 18650 Li-Ion batteries just might fit in here. So I purchased a few and sure enough they keep them safe from all the elements. Even being fully submerged in ice chest water over night the batteries came out dry and safe. Since buying these I have purchased more and use them for many other things as well. I like the color as I can find them easily. I paint the lids in order to tell which one I need, so a few different colors might be useful. Possibly some larger ones as well.

Can't believe they're going for $2 up to $4.50 on Ebay?!?! Really? Don't people shop? I tell you, after geocaching in the desert (A LOT!) these little guys hold up better than ANY plastic container out there, and they're more water proof than any metal container out there. I found a cache the other day (one of these) and it was the original container hidden back in 2006. At 110° + every summer, that is saying something. I buy some and carry them as spares when I'm out, they come in so handy for replacements for some of those cheap plastic things. I agree... w/ previous poster... Hey WalMart? Get them in dark green. :)

    • That's a flint/chert substitute, a man-made material called ferrocerium. When struck with iron, it will produce sparks to ignite tinder, with which you start your fire. It has nothing to do with the matches - it's an alternate means to start your fire.

    • It's for creating sparks to light a fire with highly flammable material like cotton fluff. It's for when you have run out of matches and is used on a knife blade, screwdriver or other bare metal item to create the sparks.

    • That is the striker. You are supposed to rub the matches along it to get them to light. Mine was covered with glue which I removed with a knife. Be careful if you do this because it will spark - a lot - if you use something made of steel.

    • I think it is supposed to be the flint to strike the match. But, the glue covers the strip, preventing the match from lighting when struck. This is a terrible product!

    • Mudd, the tiny piece of steel glued to the bottom is the single most important piece in the entire match box. It is called fire steel, or Ferrocerium Flint, it is an alloy material made by extrusion, when a blade, like your pocket knife, of any piece of hard metal is flicked across it, it will shoot a spark, often enough of one to ignite a small tinder. Hold the knife more vertical straight up and down, start at one side, and whip it across the fire steel. Works really well and it is the most overlooked part of the item. If you are out of matches, loose the matches or they are not waterproof when you refill them and get wet, this will save the day.
