Should I put a tarp under it? Do the poles have to be inserted in sleeves or hooks outside the tent.

  • A. I don't think you need a tarp, the tent base is like a tarp. Poles go in the sleeve and then attach diagonally to the corners of the base by the hooks.

  • A. The floor is a nylon fabric and, yes, it would be a good idea to put a tarp under it. It should be fairly waterproof but you would want to protect it from sharp objects (rocks, sticks etc.) under the floor. The poles don't actually inset into sleeves at the ends; rather the ends of the poles slide onto little metal pins that are part of the corner stake-down grommets. Hope this helps.

  • A. The floor is vinyl-ish/plasticy. Seems reasonably sturdy and is well-sealed, but I'd definitely put a tarp under it, as I would with any tent, since the tarp is cheap and more easily replaced. The poles go through sleeves at the top (nice ones with no gaps so you can push them straight through pretty easily), there is one clip above each corner, and their are pins that the poles slip over at the bottom of each corner. The sleeves actually let the tent material sort of hang below the poles, which helps create separation between the rain fly and the main tent body - proper, effective design. This tent is quite stable once up, and as easy to set up as any I have used.

We all know that a 4 person tent is really a 2 person tent, and this one is no different. It was a reasonably easy set-up for 1 person. I slept thru a mountain top thunderstorm and woke up dry. It is a good, comfortable, and roomy 2-person tent. I feel like I got great value from this purchase.

It is small

I knew it would be small being a 4 person tent but once I set it up and put our queen size air matress there is maybe a foot on each side left no room to even stand up unless you stand on the mattress. Once you have anything else like bag with clothes really gets tight. Can't imagine if anyone needs to get out in the night when nature calls unless your next to door. If you don't mind the size it was very easy to set up by myself and seems like a decent tent for the price.

First, I want to say that this had nothing to do with Walmart. The store did an excellent job. Shipping was fast ans service was great. It was the product that was faulty right out of the package. The shock cord that holds the poles together was broken in several places and the grommets on the ends of the poles (they appear to be mechanically bound to the fiberglass pole and then glued) were either missing altogether or were not bound to the poles. According to the papers that came with the tent, there is one year guarantee against defects in workmanship or materials, so I called Coleman. The rep told me to go to a major sporting goods store and just buy some new cord. I suggested that if I wanted to work for Coleman, I would apply for a job. What I wanted was a well constructed product. Coleman flatly refused to back their product, so since it had only been two weeks since I bought the tent, I took it back to Walmart and they cheerfully refunded my money. I was surprised that Coleman took that stance. They always seemed like a decent company to deal with.

Pros: Excellent ventilation due to a full mesh top. Rain fly is adequate and can be partially unzipped and folded back. Easy to put up, even for one person - stake rings at the corners with pins for the poles. Bottom section is fully sealed. Taller profile than most tents with a similar floor size, making for more usable space, easier standing, and better airflow/heat dissipation. Cons: Complete lack of privacy without the rain fly on, due to the mesh top section - a fair trade-off to maximize ventilation. Door zipper started snagging on a flap within the first day of use. Still worked okay for me, but I could see it getting stuck or causing a tear with more use. This is a small but serious flaw. I have so far only used this tent for 5 nights of camping at Bonnaroo, and it performed well. I kept the rainfly on even in the extreme Tennessee heat due to being in close proximity to other campers (another tent inches away), since the top is otherwise a bit too open. After some significant rain my tent was completely dry while others around me complained about puddles in their tents. For $50 you can't beat this tent, though it is not for cold weather, and I don't know how durable it would be with frequent use. Worth the added $15 or so over no-name brands this size, in my opinion. Be aware that the color may vary from that pictured - the one I got is tan and orange and a bit cheap looking, though this was not a deal-breaker for me. If anything, the lighter colors are better for hot, sunny weather. The zipper issue is more serious and enough for me to knock off one star, as it will continue to be a minor annoyance until it really gets stuck or rips something, which will be worse - you do NOT want holes if you camp anywhere with insects.

I purchased this tent after reading other positive reviews, and I couldn't be more satisfied. Being my first time ever camping out, this tent was fairly easy to set up. The very next morning after setting it up there was a moderate rain, and then that night a virtual monsoon. My sister and I remained dry the entire weekend. We were even able to take in three ladies that got caught in the storm until it passed. Awesome experience with the help of an awesome tent.
