The pipe hawk is the middle size of the three hammer type Cold Steel tomahawks. It's just right for most uses. High quality forged steel head and hickory handle. I have all three sizes and if I could only have one it would be the Trail hawk. Top end Cold Steel quality. Highly recommended.

I've done my fair share of camping. I use to carry an old WWII USMC hospital knife for splitting wood and general site prep. I have since put this tool on the shelf and have been using the pipe hawk. The hawk is made of quality steel that holds a great edge. The handle is field replaceable should you damage it. It is lighter than my old hospital knife. I would recommend giving this tool a try should you be headed to the field.

You can purchase custom made hawks for $175+, but with a little time and effort, you can make this tool look very similar (no offense intended to the craftsfolk that make the hand forged products). The Cold Steel tool is very functional - and you don't mind possibly breaking the handle or knicking the forging on a $30 tool throwing it at targets, but you would like for it to look like the custom one. There are a number of blogs that give detailed information on how to this. Followed the instructions and it was very easy to do. Just a little time and basic tools. Here is the link to one from McJoe that was very helpful (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014BMBA6/ref=s9_psimh_gw_p200_d9_i2?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=1XFFR1WVN8VZC913Y91F&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2079475242&pf_rd_i=desktop) Here's my version: 1) Strip the paint from the hawk head. Did this with the handle on. Used a stripper to soften the paint, then used a drill with a wire wheel to strip the remaining. Be careful with the wire wheel - do not wear gloves around a rotating tool (basics of shop class folks). 2) Remove the head from the hawk and clean up remaining paint. Throw away the set screw. Many hawk forums state this and I fully agree. You don't want to lock the head onto the hawk handle because it will cause it to splinter. 3) Use a Dremel tool to deburr the edges of the handle slot in the head. This will prevent the head from gouging into the handle. 4) Used a vinegar bluing technique to "age" the head. Looks very nice Left it in vinegar overnight. You can use an old sauce pot on the stove top and heat the head vinegar to accelerate the process - just smells a bit. 5) Sand the hickory handle to remove splinters with 120 grit, then 220 grit. 6) Use a stain to darken the handle. I really liked the result from MinWax Special Walnut. About two coats looks very nice and give the handle an aged appearance. 7) Cover a cookie sheet with foil and heat oven to about 190 F. Place the dry handle in the oven and let it get to temperature. Remove the heated handle from the oven wearing a mitt and rub an old candle (or beeswax) onto the heated handle. Apply liberally on the head end of the handle (the wax will help seat the head onto the handle). 8) I rinsed the tomahawk head to remove the vinegar and to stop the reaction. Dry the head using an old rag - there will be a black stain that comes off onto the rag. I applied a lightweight machine oil to the blade to seal it (you can use barrel bluing as well per the blogs). 9) I then slid the the head onto the handle - many site state to use centrifugal force to seat it by swinging. I tapped it into place using a scrap piece of wood. Cost wise - $1 unscented candle, $2 bottle of distilled white vinegar, $5 Minwax stain, - paint stripper, sandpaper, drill with wire wheel and Dremel grinding tool that already had in shop. The finished product looks incredible and is still very functional.
