My son is a Marine deployed to Afghanistan and conditions are HOT HOT HOT with little opportunity (or time) for showering. Wet wipes are okay but water to actually rinse away sand and dirt is what my son wanted. I found a $43 solar shower at a camping supply place and then a friend found this online... I ordered four of them and shipped them three days later. It took over two weeks for them to arrive but they were the most popular box in the company that day! It's hot enough that 5G water is good for a shower pretty fast and every guy in the company got a shower that first day... I got a great big thank you and was thrilled. I'm sending four more as soon as I get them!

I have had ONE camp shower for about 10 years. It can last that long. The only 'problem' I have ever had is getting it raised high enough to get under the shower spray. I shortened the hose the shower head is on by cutting it. For one person you dont have to fill it full and I say this becaues it is heavy for me to lift high and hang up if too full. Honestly, you could use it to save energy by shutting off the water heater all summer long. I have used it more than once at home when the water heater or the well went out. IT"S GREAT!

This product worked well to heat enough water for one nice long-lasting shower. The water heater in my RV broke a long time ago and this is a very affordable alternative.

I am interested in this solar shower for my daughter who will be visiting a country overseas for med school. There are several of these I have looked at and this one at walmart is the cheapest by far. Just wanted to know if this is very durable and easy to use. thank you

  • yes, based solely on everything ive read about the major competitors' similar offering.leaking heads and hoses and inoperability with soapy digits.this seems to be the superior product.

  • this one is as good as I've seen around - they all will degenerate with usage and age.

  • They are all basically the same design; some you may be paying for name. At $9-12, buy a couple and keep a reserve. Very durable and you just have to make sure clip is all the way closed or water will leak out.

  • Yes, easy to use and durable. She will need to keep the unit laying flat with a towel underneath in the area she intends to shower as it is heavy when full. Doesn't work as well hanging up to heat and the nozel leaks if the hose is not kept up higher than the unit. But in general, for what it is, I think it's probably as good or better than some of the other brands I've read reviews about.

  • Yes this is a good shower for the money. Doesnt hold up if you use to much water. Only fill half way. Holds heat for a couple of hours. Takes a couple of hours to heat up. Can get to hot if left in the sun too long.

  • I found the bag is hard to fill with water unless there is water under pressure available, such as directly out of a spigot/faucet or hose. Other than that, it seems to work fine. I used a similar shower bag many years ago in Alaska for about three months and found that I had to heat the water on the camp stove in order for it to be warm enough for a comfortable shower but this was Alaska, if your daughter is going somewhere with a warm climate, she'll probasbly appreciate a cool shower.

  • I would recommend it it works just fine but it needs to be placed directly in the sun.

  • Considering the very affordable price a person could buy several. They are very compact. My wife wished she had had one on a medical mission trip to Africa. These work much better than the bucket baths she had to take. In a warm ambient environment the plastic would be very pliable and easy to manipulate. In the cool environs of the mountains, the plastic is alot stiffer but still workable. Good luck to your dear daughter in medical education!

  • I have not tried other brands, but this worked well for me. The bag holds a great deal of water and warms in the sun very well. The shower head and hose seems to be fairly durable. The stream of water works by gravity and does not come out with a great deal of force, but maybe needs to be hung higher.

  • at the center of our solar system is a star we call the"sun".this item uses the infrared radiation from that star to heat liquid water to bathe in.there is a sliding scale comprised of amount of infrared radiation with ambient temperature which determines the liquid temperature expelled from this item."how hot does it have to be outside?"=ambient temperature! which is one component of the equation of infrared X ambient=temperature you wash your dirtiness with.

  • doesn't have to be hot outside, just a lot of sun - real cold days will hamper the heating some, but old 'sol will get the job done.

  • I think if it is in direct sun, it won't matter. Of course, I am talking 65 degrees and up.

  • Water temp will pretty much match outside temp. So if u want really warm water then it would need tO be really warm outside and in direct sun light.

  • You fill it with 5 gallons of water and place it in direct sunlight for a minimum of 3 hours and you WILL have a warm/hot shower.

  • It doesnt have to necessarily be hot but you do need lots of sunshine, and it needs to be in direct sun to heat up.

  • I wish I could say for sure, but on days with ambient temps in the 50's the water warmed to a "comfortable" level in 2-3 hours. I would assume that protection from the wind would minimize radiant loss.

I wonder how long the water in it will stay warm? since if we place it under the sun during the day, the time we will get back to the camp is late at night, will the water get cold by then? thanks.
by applepanda 8/15/2011
  • its a sliding scale between how much infrared radiation and ambient temperature.
    by unk14/30/2014
Was this answer helpful? (0) (2)
  • well, if its cold outside, its going to cool the water rapidly - otherwise, it might stay moderately warm for a few hours after exposure to the sun.

  • Depends on how outside temperature is. If it is hot all day, good chance it will stay warm for a few hours after sunset. Ours stayed at comfortable temp when it got down to 70's at night.

  • if u havent purchased this already, the water stays warm for a good amount of time at least until 6-7pm if u let it sit all day

  • There's too many variables to answer your question completely. The water in the bag doesn't ever get really hot, just warm. Water holds heat very well but it depends on how warm it gets during the day and how quickly it cools down at night as to the rate of heat loss. You will do well to fill the bag completely because the more water in the bag the less heat loss over time. Also, you can always heat up some water on a camp stove and add to the warm water in the bag. Just take a funnel if you plan to fill it with water out of a jug or pot, I found this bag hard to fill without a spigot or hose.

  • Ours did not remain heated. It pretty much matched "room temp" and/or outside temp. I would say equivalent to bottled water being left out in the sun.. It will start to cool once the sun goes away.
