Clickfree C3 1TB USB 3.0 Wireless Desktop External Hard Drive w/ Automatic Backup, Black 3.9 5 7 7
OK...UNLESS you have a Mac on your network Clickfree claims this product works with Macs, i.e. the Apple OS X .. and I guess it will IF you have only ONE User Account on your Mac. Performed the initial backup via USB on my iMac signed in as myself. Took a while but everything (just personal content; no system files or Apps) was backed up to the device in appropriately named folders, e.g. Movies, Documents, etc. Now, since on a Mac a user can only "see" their own files and certain "Shared" or "Public" files, I switched to my wife's account to back up her stuff. Well, the device (still connected by USB) started putting everything into a graball folder named "Other". Cancelled the operation and went to my daughter's Wintel PC which used to be our primary computer. There Clickfree did back up all the various users' personal content into appropriately named folders -- took forever as that computer only has USB 1.1 ports. Contacted Clickfree re the Mac issue, which I clearly spelled out. Their first response was to parrot the script from the Users' Manual about troubleshooting the wireless connection. I told them to please read my message and answer the question. Finally they came back with a manual workaround in "Advanced Options" to pick and choose Mac folders in other users' accounts and then back those up via USB. This still dumped everything into the "Other" folder. I informed them on 2/28/12 that the so-called solution was not a solution at all and have yet to receive a response. I have returned the device to Wal-Mart for a full refund. Note: the rest of the Clickfree features, e.g. wireless connectivity, automatic backup of new files, etc. work as advertised.I would recommend, especially if you have both PC's and Mac's in your network, to look at a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device, e.g. Buffalo or Western Digital, which have models specifically designed to work with the Mac Time Machine as well as general PC backup. I have ordered a Buffalo 1TB LinkStation Live, costing $110, which attaches by Ethernet cable to a home router and automatically backs up EVERYTHING on both the Mac's and the PC's. That way you have handily "ghosted" the hard drives on your computers for restoration if the original computer's hard drive fails. Some of these NAS devices also serve as a wireless streaming media server for DLNA-compliant playback devices, so you can put all your videos, pictures and music in one centrally accessible spot. 03/10/2012
Don't bother This is the first Clickfree product that I have purchased that did not live up to expectations. The wireless function does not work and one of the three tech support people actually asked me to try it on someone else's computer since I only have one computer. How ridiculous to think that someone would allow me to invade their privacy by downloading personal information from their computer. The idea was that I should only send the product back if it didn't work on another computer. 03/08/2012
Mostly awesome but not quite as simple as it says I bought this over a conventional back up hard drive for the wireless back up. Had to hook it up twice to my PC to get it to work wirelessly and now that is perfect. I could not get it to work on my Mac however. It downloaded an update first then came up with an error which has not been corrected. I have not had the tie to contact their suppoert, but the whole purpose of the drive is simplicity.... 02/07/2012
