I MAKE A HOT DISH FROM THIS. PUT RAVIOLI IN A PAN. CUT EACH RAVIOLI IN 2 OR MORE PIECES. ADD: 1/3 CUP PEAS AND JUICE MIX WELL AND HEAT. THEN LET SET WHILE YOU ADD 2 SLICES AMERICAN CHEESE, (BROKEN UP) INTO THE RAVIOLI. IF THE MIXTURE IS STILL THIN, ADD A TBSP OF DRY POTATO TO IT AND MIX WELL. SERVE.

Not sure why but this product is $1.00 per can at the local walmarts here in west tn. At the present online price of $3.62 for a 4 pack, that is approximately $0.90 cents per can. It's a good value in accordance with todays prices. I like to heat a can (not the can, the contents of :))and make grilled cheese sandwiches which make a perfect hot meal for myself and spouse. There are various additions you can add for variety such as grated parmesan cheese, sliced cheese, etc. Not sure why anyone would rate this product less than 5 stars. Really. Chef Boyardee has been around longer than I can remember, have made this product for many years, it's good quality, low price, and very tasty. If you want better, go to Italy and see if you can get a hot tasty meal for less than a dollar.

  • Can opener. Actually could be more convenient if it had pull tops.

  • The ones I bought needed a can opener. A pull top would be much nicer.

  • Although 'Pop Tops' are becoming more and more convenient, not all of the Chef's products are pop tops, at least, not yet. So, to answer your question, yes and no. Some cans still have the need of an opener and some do not. I think the 4-pack is becoming more and more 'pop top', but until it's totally in conformity, when you go to a store, take a look.

I am looking for the pop top lids to use in a 72-hour kit. I don't want to have to add a can opener as well.
by Beprepared 6/14/2013
  • if you need pop tops for sure-- then shop for emergency items-- in a store-- to inspect for undented cans and good expiration dates. many of my .com cans arrive dented -- but with ok expiration dates. a can opener is very light weight-- buy a GOOD one [ not the .99 cent one that will probably break with 1-2 uses! ] an emergency kit should have quality items with good dates and rotated frequently.-- meat-fruit-carbs to give energy--and comfort in an emergency. also put in water-proof matches, candles and a good sharp knife with protective cover PLUS water!! lots of water.

  • product lids vary-- always!!!! have a good quality can opener available and not the 88 cent kind that break-- get a decent all metal one-- if you ever need your emergency kit-- you need the best tools to survive-- not junk.

  • You need a can opener to open Chef Boyardee cans. If you decide to add a can opener to your kit, OXO makes the best, easiest to use and clean can opener.

  • Although 'Pop Tops' are becoming more and more convenient, You should always pack a can opener, especially in an emergency kit. Try a G.I. (Army) P-38 Can Opener & P-51 Can Opener if space is an issue. I have those little life saving devices all over. Now, to answer your question, yes and no. Some cans still have the need of an opener and some do not. I think the 4-pack is becoming more and more 'pop top', but until it's totally in conformity, when you go to a store, take a look.

  • always read the shelf life numbers on can bottoms [usually] BEFORE buying and storing-- AND rotate and replace them often. most can goods are a year ahead of purchase date in a busy store. this item CBRD ravioli is a high fat/carb product good for emergency storage of energy necessary foods...add canned fruit in juice [better than sugar water/syrup] and have WATER!!!
    by abearwhocares4/5/2015

  • long term storage food should be regularly used and rotated-- not put back forever and ever. if you ever need emergency food you want the freshest quality you can have...so YES-- have emergency food but use it and replace it regularly for safety and freshness. can goods are usually safe for at least a year--higher salt content lasts longer-- but they get stale too. can linings [ usually a plastic coating] break down too-- then you eat the plastic chemicals too!!

  • Before cans leave a factory, they are pressure sealed, with all air removed. In a perfect world, these cans could be stored forever, without harm. But, nothing is perfect. Cans get dropped during delivery and any opening in the can, no matter how tiny will allow air to contaminate the contents. Old, stale food would just give you a tummy ache, but, botulism is deadly. If you're determined to store some cans, check them over carefully for any bulges or signs of denting. Check them again every month.

  • This would be a good shelf life product, however, the cans I received were dented in many places. the dents caused me to not think the product would be safe either to store or for consumption. I'm ok with a small dent, but not a 45' dent - that's too much - and on all four cans under the plastic wrap. The expiration date on the dented cans was April 16, 2016.
