I love these!!! I installed these in my house to make it more "futuristic", and so I dont have to remember to turn lights off and so I dont have to turn them on (I'm very lazy!). At $25 apiece, your energy savings will take some time to recoop cost, and depend on your household situation and number of rooms installed in. Great for those that have kids!! I only have basic electric circuits knowledge and had no problem following the diagram on the instructions. Most home switches have 3 wires, a positive, negative, and ground, though not always color coded. Before you disconnect the existing wires, look at the labels on the switch box to see what they are and DONT get them mixed up! Also, ALWAYS turn the breaker switch off while rewiring these! Daytime is easier with more natural light, or just use a flashlight, etc. Some of my rooms have a 2 or 3 switch panel, so I just bought the matching cover seperately that has one switch hole enlarged to fit the sensor. For example, bathroom has light switch and fan switch with one cover plate. Buy cover that has one reg sized hole for fan switch and larger hole for sensor switch and they all fit perfectly for me. I have a 3 light switch panel also and found a cover with one large and two small holes for it. Once you have the sensor wired, you set the sensitivity level BEFORE putting the cover back on. Then set the time you want it to stay on when activated from 5-30 min. This requires some thought. If you set to 5 min and you're in the shower for longer than 5 min, the lights go out and you have to stick your arm out the shower and wave it to turn them back on. If you set it to 30 min and you are only in the bathroom for 5 min, then it stays on 25 more min after you have left, wasting electricity. Once you start using it you'll find the optimal setting for your habits. Some rooms are better off with the regular on/off variety and this switch has that setting on it also. Another scenario is if you are the type to get up from bed at night to use the BR, you will trigger the light and wake your spouse, etc., so might be better to leave traditional switch here. VERY handy for closets where you are in and out quickly. Not so handy if your switch is BEHIND the door where it is harder to trigger. Mine all work great and have not malfunctioned after one year use. One more tip, change all your home bulbs to CFLs and see your elec. bill drop significantly as I did!!
Rated 5 out of 5 by RobertM12 Perfect solution for that dark hallway.
I got one of these from a local hardware store that was going out of business for cheap. I put it in the down stairs hallway so I can see at night. It picks me at about 10 feet away from the side and lights the hall. It also picks me up walking down the stairs. The greatest part about it is the light only stays on for 5 seconds just enough to walk through to the bathroom were another sensor is in the ceiling light. I ordered two more for lights upstairs. I will be able to walk around the whole house without touching a light switch. It also has a light sensitivity adjustment so you can set how dark it has to be before it activates. You can also set the on time up to 20 min.
No more using a flashlight or running back and forth between light switches.
Rated 2 out of 5 by MikeNJ2011 Probably good for places like garage where you will have to use it occasionally. Mine went off after about 6 months of use. I was using it in my hallway.
Rated 5 out of 5 by PinoyTexan I'm ordering another one for my 4-inch LED recessed lighting directly over the kitchen sink. I am using the first one for a 6-inch LED recessed light retro kit on the bathroom area ceiling. This unit can be adjusted to minimum sensitivity setting such that it really turns on only when it is dark. Timer is likewise adjustable at 5-minute increments.
Rated 5 out of 5 by MattOcala installed in garage with 2 CFL 23 watt bulbs. Works great. I have it set to turn off after about 2 minutes.
