This product is not for folks without patience. It takes a bit to master, but once mastered, a blast to have. I wish the hems were not such flimsy plastic as the smaller hem broke in several places when it slipped out of my hand. Had to order backups but taping is a great cheater too! You must view the DVD and you must read the directions as they are the most helpful. It is easy to use again once you take the time, don't get flustered and master the machine. It will take you no time to master either.

I have been knitting by hand for years, and after reading the reviews of seasoned knitters, I had some real doubts about this machine. I think it does a great job if you ditch all of your prior knowledge, and approach this as something you don't know anything about. Watch the DVD, read the book, knit the projects in the book, so you can learn the functions each project illustrates, and one of the most important things -- at first start with Caron brand yarn recommended by the machine, so you eliminate problems that may be caused by a poor choice of yarn. If you follow the instructions, your machine would work great. The machine would drop stiches if you don't pull on the thread as you start a new row and then RELEASE the thread after the first few stitches, or if you selected the wrong yarn/knitting plate combination. The Walmart set included an additional knitting plate, an extension, and stitch counter, and it was a great value compared to Joann's even after using a Joann's coupon.

Honestly, when I first got the machine, I was ready to send it back. Instead, I went online and watched videos of how the machine worked. First step for me, throw away the table clams, they caused more problems than they were worth, and buy a couple non-slip mats to go underneath. Second step, move slowly across the row, it should feel like a hot knife going through butter. If you have to force the carriage, you're doing something wrong-see trouble shooting. Third step, create/buy a cast on comb or claw weights. The machine needs weight to work properly, and the hem they give you just isn't enough, also those S hooks are useless. After these three steps, I was cranking out 3 scarfs a day. Now, the techniques for working the machine are completely different from hand knitting, so it will take some practice, and lots of patience. Fair Isle for instance was particularly difficult to learn. In summary, the machine can be frustrating in the beginning, and requires additional objects to work properly, but once it does it is awesome!

I am trying to know whether or not the Ultimate Sweater Machine, Delux has smaller size needles to knit lace work such as needles size 2, 3, 4, 5 etc. I will appreciate to know. Thanks.
    by cocoa1234 3/15/2009
    • No, this is a mid-gauge machine and can't work with yarn lighter than light-worsted (3). There are lace techniques to create very pretty patterns, but lace yarn would not work.

    • No. Although I have used crochet thread and cotton yarns to make tablecloths, placemats, dishrags, I had to double the thread. You are looking for a fine gauge or standard guage machine, check out Singer, Silver Reed, or Brother for Fine Guage machines to Standard Guage machines.

    • The machine comes with keyplates that are intended to copy the size of 6 different needle sizes. These are placed in the carriage that carries the yarn across the machine. It's absolutely true that you need to look at knitting differently when using the machine--you set up the row ahead of time before running the carriage across, so lace would be done by moving the stitches and needles to set the pattern up first and then knitting across the row. The smaller the keyplate size in the carriage and the smaller the yarn is what would make the delicate fabric of the lace.

    • I believe you can purchase different size needles, however on youtube there are illistrations on lace making with the machine just as you purchased it. you can go to the Caron website for needles or any website that offers Caron machine product.

    • The needles are one size, but you can knit lace by dropping stitches. You have to change how you think about knitting. The machine comes with a variety of carriage sizes to work with smaller yarns.

What do i have to do 1 piece and then another poece then crochet together...or can it be made in one piece?
    by specialty2011 1/1/2012
    • If you have a big enough machine, possibly two machines combined, you could make it in one go. You could also use a technique called sew as you go that would combine the pieces as you work them.

    • The deluxe can make afghans to 41in wide, I have added to machines together to make bed blankets up to 80in wide

    • it depends on how big you make it - i got a few extension after i got mine - mine is over 9 feet long now - so i can make big blankets and no sewing together......

    • It depends on the size of afghan you want to make. If you want to do it all in one piece, i would suggest getting the extention or another machine which would give you a total of 200 needles, minus any extentions.

    • If you do not want a very wide afgan, you can use the machine to do it in one piece. Actually the instruction booklet has afgan designs, and creative way to connect multiple pieces.

    • You have the use of 100 needles with the basic package, but you can purchase extension which can increase your needles to 130, or purchase a second machine and then hook them together. so you could in theory have it as large as you needed it (I have hooked three machines together for 300 needles (which made a twin size blanket)

    • Yes and yes. This Machine comes with a very easy afghan pattern in the book, you braid the peices together. very pretty. Now I am an avid knitter and do not mind piecing "pieces" together, you can do that too. Also you can buy extentions for your machine, which is what I did many moons ago, of course I need a long place to set it.
