I was looking for a bar exactly like the one I use at the gym - soft grip and no weights to change out. This one fits the bill.

Perfect weight bar for home exercises

I wanted to find a weighted bar to use for some workout DVDs I have. I didn't want to spend a lot, and also didn't want a bar with weighted plates. While researching on the web, I found the Cap Barbell Workout Bar and it fit my criteria. I bought the 20 lbs bar, and have used it with my DVDs already. It's a good size, padded, and fits perfectly in my hands. Also, you can't beat the price!

    • Each weight has a different color, and they are not interchangeable.

    • The colors change depending on the weight of the bar. I bought a 15 pound bar, and got blue end tips. So, it's not a color choice - it is a weight choice.

    • It depends on the weight you want. Each color is for a given weight.

    • The colors are indicators of the weight of each bar. For example, the 12# weight bar has medium blue end caps.

    • The colors are by weight. Choose the weight you need. For arms and upper body you will want a bar that is not as heavy as the one you would use if you are doing legs and back.

    • I don't think you get to pick the color, the colors are according to which weight you choose. I chose 10 lbs and received a bar with pink caps.

    • I started with the 5 lb weight and worked my way up. When I finished my out-patient rehab, I was using a 4 lb weight (post stroke rehab) so 5 lbs was about right. You can try lifting some common objects to see what's too heavy. For example, a gallon of water is about 8.3 lbs. Try a couple of books or any objects that feel about right. They should not be too easy to lift or the bar will not be of real benefit when you buy it. Whatever seems right, put it on a bathroom scale and see what it/they weigh.

    • I learned that to start light. And just as a disclaimer, ask your doctor. For myself, I bought the orange, purple and black. And that works for me. I am 50 years old and overweight with a bad back. The bars have helped my back and I am am told I am "loookin' good". This way, I can pick and decide what bar works when. I hope this helps.

    • Find a bar that is comfortable for you to lift. In a typical routine, you might lift this bar 20-50 times. You'll probably find a bar that weighs between 8-15 lbs to be ideal.

    • It depends on what would be the purpose of the bar. Are you using for just strength exercises, cardio or H.I.I.T, which is high intensity interval training. Its a combination of both. If so I would say a 10lb would do wonders. Any questions look me up at

    • I am a female about 160lbs. I got the 8 lb. I would say the 5 - 8 lb is a good starting point. Not too heavy but not to light. I like the feel of the 8 lb. I'm older and out of shape, if you are in shape you may want to try the 8 -10 lb to start. Hope this helps.

    • If you are already using hand weights, try a bar that has the next weight up. you don't want too much weight and strain yourself

    • I started out with 15lb. bar and it is just right. Not too light but pretty challenging. I think the 15 lb bar is a good start and overall a weight that you will use with a variety of exercises.
