Love it! Im not sure if the mini sd cards are discontinued like the other guys said but you can use it - you do need tapes. Its so clear, has OK sound, very nice for what i want to use it for (make and share videos online) i havent taken still pictures yet but the picture of video is similar to that of my still shots (using a nikon d80) i use a tripod and get professional results. It takes some time to get used to (at least for me) but its a great deal that CAN make movies! It's my 9th camcorder and thus far the best - I spent 100 less than walmart wants but know where not to buy from online- if your not sure walmart may be a better option since you may be able to return it if it doesnt work out. If quality and professional results matter get it - if not save money and buy a cheap one!!! 10/24/2009
Excellent Camcorder I am 75 years old and purchased a Canon Vixia HV30 a year ago that is basically the same as the HV40. Mini-SD cards with adapters to use as SD cards are available on line at several outlets, such as Adorama and OEMPCWorld. The HV30 has a maximum capabilty of 2 GB Mini-SD cards that will hold about 7000 pictures. I have taken 16 DVC (each 1 hour) of video and over 4,000 pictures with this Camcorder. The great benefit of the DVC tapes is that you don't have to download to continue using the camcorder. The only drawback is that there is no DVC Player - you must play back through the camcorder. The wireless controller makes that simple. The picture quality and video quality are excellent. The 10x Optical Zoom is adequate (18x would be better). I bought the larger battery (2L24H - 2400 mAhr) and use it primarily with the smaller (2L13 - 1200 mAhr) one for backup. This is my 3rd camcorder since 1989. The first 2 used full size tapes and this camcorder takes better videos, is easier to carry and use, and I don't have to take both a video and still camera on a trip. You can also copy specific frames from the video to save as a digital photo. This is better than missing a shot because of the normal "digital delay" of a half second. 03/05/2010
a joke Please beware that if you buy this item no one carries the (mini sd) flash card, not even Canon.It does not come with any media to record on. At least buy some tapes for it if you can before you leave the store. The mini sd card that it calls for is an obsolete item. I do not know how good this cam. is because it cannot be used as of now. 09/21/2009
