This telephoto zoom lens is designed with Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer technology while retaining compactness and lightness, in response to demands of photographers. This high zoom ratio lens is equivalent to a focal length of 88-400mm in the 35mm format (when used on Canon EOS cameras compatible with EF-S lenses), and the image stabilizer effect equivalent to a shutter speed about 4 stops faster than the same size lens without Image Stabilizer. In other words, if the slowest shutter speed you could formerly hold a 250mm lens steadily was 1/250th of a second, with Canon's 4-stop stabilization correction, you could hand-hold at shutter speeds as slow as 1/15th of a second. It also uses a UD-glass lens element to correct chromatic aberration for excellent image quality throughout the zoom range. This new EF-S telephoto lens with great features delivers excellent performance at an affordable price for all photographers.Type: Lenses

Hi there, I need your help. I have a Canon EOS Rebel XT and I would like to take some action shots for my friends at their barrel shows and ropings. The 55mm lens that came with the camera is not so good at getting pictures close up unless I am on the barrel as they round it or on the steer as they rope it. Would you please let me know which lens would be best for these events. Most of the shows are out doors in a covered arena. Thank you for your help!

    • A. For an entry level lens it is very sharp. If 250mm is long enough this should work in good daylight use. However, you may have to try it out to see if the focus is fast enough for equestrian use. If not then I'd put some extra money into the Tamron 70-300 VC lens. It is an excellent buy and produces incredible images and has vibration control as well as fast focusing ability in day light use.

    • A. You realize the the lowest F Stop on this lens is 4 on this lens. Even with the IS it may not be enough in a covered arena to get action shots. I use my lens at track meets, stock car racing events and soccer games. Even with the 1600ASA setting I still get darkened shots in low light. (I fix this with "Adobe Light Room"). The zoom works but as you extend the zoom the need for more light increases. Good outdoors but questionable in low light.

    • A. This lens is great, depending on how far you are, you might want to look into the zoom. This one has the image stabilizer, which I recommend if you have shakey hands. If this zoom doesn't get close enough for you I would get the 300mm.

    • A. With the longer lens like this, it will make it alot easier to get closer to the action without being in the arena with them. Also, the IS (image stableizer) helps alot too with action stuff. My son used to ride bulls and I used a 35mm canon with this same lens and it is much better.

    • A. For the kind of shot you are describing, you'd probably need one of the professional sport lenses. They are rather nice at this sort of thing, but cost a little bit more. $4000 to $9000 apiece last time I looked. If you have a lot of sunlight, then you might try the 100mm-400mm L. That's only about $1000-$1500, but is pretty slow. The best you're gonna do for cheap is the 70-300mm f/3.5-5.6 IS which is also a bit slow but since you won't be as close and the zoom is less you can probably get some sharp shots that won't be terribly close up. Your best bet without breaking the bank is to get the 7D or T2i with a 200mm or 300mm and just crop the shot to "zoom" in. They both have more than twice (18) the megapixels of the XT (only 8) so you can come out with the same quality photo from farther away.

    • A. This is a good lens for action shots, but you have to have good sun light, which of most sport games taking place in sun light, if you use this lens for sport in low light, this lens may be little slow, you may have to get f/2.8, but those lenses cost about 10 times more:) good luck.

Bought it and gave it a workout the next day. I took over 300 photos. Shot indoors and outdoors and it performed well in both situations. IS works great, auto focus works great, overall I would say good lens at a great price. A little fuzzy at the 250mm end but for the price you can't beat it. I took some portraits of my neice that turned out beautiful. This lens on the Rebel XTi is a great pair for photography at a reasonable price.

I've only used this lens a few times, but it is a great lens. Stays very clear at full zoom. Here are two pictues that I took at full zoom (250).

This is a nice lens for when you are ready to "go one step above" the lens that comes with your camera. You will definitely be able to tell the difference weight-wise. It's a little heavy. It also drains your camera battery life a little faster. By faster I mean instead of having 8 hours of battery life, you might get 6.5 hours when using the bigger lens. Not so bad that I would not purchase this lens again. I have two batteries so it's not a big deal. Unlike the lens that comes with your camera, when you hold the button half way down prior to taking the picture, you will hear a noise. At first I thought there was something wrong with the lens but I contacted Canon and was assured that this was normal. Having said all that, it takes great, sharp, up close pictures. I am just an average person who enjoys taking pictures of family, friends and anything that moves. Not even close to a professional. But the lens makes my pictures look close enough to professional for me. :-) I would definitely recommend this lens.

I just love this lens! I have got some GREAT shots. No complaints here! In the picture, I am a little more than 1/2 a mile away. (wish it would show a little bigger so you could see better) Just took it this morning.

This product does meet my expections and then some. I love that I am able to take close-ups of the birds in flight. I actually can see the wing span of the bird. This is quite important to me, as I am an artist and I need to see detail.

After a ton of research and nail-biting, I chose this lens as my first upgrade from the 18-55mm kit lens, that came with my new Canon Rebel XS. I love it. For the price, I don't think I could have purchased a better lens.

This was a replacement lens for me. I bought this lens not wanting to spend too awful much as I am not a professional just like taking photos of my children and family. And this lens works wonderful for that !! It takes wonderful clear pictures and 10x's better lens than what came with my camera !
