I had bought this lens for my SLR body, and overall it is a very good lens. The outcome of the photos are very sharp and I enjoy shooting with it. However, I do want to point out that ,under certain conditions, that the autofocus will not work or will go "hunting". But I do recommend this lens as a starter who has just transitioned from P&S cameras to DSLRs

I actually dropped and broke this lens that came with my camera and had to replace with one from the store. The order to store option worked well, and did the trick.

Great lens that doesn't disappoint!

Great kit lens. Auto focus is insanely fast; blink & you'll miss it. As others noted, focusing wheel could be a tad wider...but that doesn't affect operation. Image stabilization is too notch. I took the photo below as I came to a crossroad from inside an idling (vibrating)18-wheeler big-rig semi truck. Sharp as a tack.

Lightening Fast

I got this lens for my birthday and it has given me a great experience! It is my favorite lens to use, especially for landscape and portrait photography. The pictures are always really crisp and easy to work with. 10/10

Amazingly easy

I have used this lens for the past year. It is exactly what it is designed to be. A simple light weight lens. I have "L" lenses and other EF lenses but still like to use this one from time to time. Not necessarily the sharpest but does pretty good. Best around f/8 and up.

Not Bad

had this lens for over a year and cycled about 5000 shots. the stabialization broke after about 3000 clicks a cheap lens relatively speaking.I will say this lens was not babied many shots on a monopod and in back pack in the desert south west so it may feel cheap and even though it is plastic it held up and thats what counts
the biggest pain in the patoot is the rotating barrel it makes using polorizer and graduated neutral density filters a time consuming pain to use and those filters are essential and commonly used or should be by all serious photogs.

good but not great

Okay. This is the the kit lens that comes with most canon DSLRs. The XSi, 40d and XS already have this. If you didn't buy the camera with this, I'd still suggest you move along.

The lens is better than the older version that came with the Rebel XT or XTi, however it suffers from most of the same problems. It is flimsy. The build quality is fairly poor. There is no focus ring for manual, you just twist the end of the telescoping tube. The tube itself is quite wobbly when extended. The images aren't very sharp, and are low contrast. Although, admittedly, the images are a bit sharper than the regular 18-55.

It does have Image Stabilization included for only a couple hundred bucks! That would run you another $400-$500 on most lenses.

Sorry if the review sounds so negative, there's just not much to gush about this lens. Essentially, this is as cheap a lens as they can make to include with the cameras so you have at least something to take pictures with.

If you want a cheap lens, by all means look at Canon's 50mm f/1.8. That, while being uber-cheap, still manages to produce some very sharp pictures, with better contrast., and is so fast (1.8!) that there is no need for IS. It usually runs less than $100, and while build quality is even worse, is all around a better choice..

I give it overall 3 stars. It isn't great, and there's so much more that could be worse, and it does have IS, so there's something.

Kit Lens!  Just move along

I received this lens with my Canon T2i as a birthday present. In the beginning, I couldn't really tell the difference between this and any other lens. As I gained experience, I found out exactly how limited this lens can be. I found out that it absolutely hates anything but the most perfect lighting conditions. If your subject is slightly too bright or slightly too dark it refuses to focus, leaving you to focus manually which can be a bother under certain circumstances. Even when the auto-focus works it is inaccurate, leaving you with blurry images.

Overall- It is a decent enough lens for rank beginners who treat their DSLR camera more like an expensive point and shoot. If you are one of these brand new DSLR users, I would recommend an upgrade as soon as you gain some experience and develop your shooting style.
