The 2042B002 Canon EFS 18-55mm Lens comes equipped with Optical Image Stabilizer technology, which allows the user to take pictures four stops slower than otherwise possible. This is a feature that can only be found in the Canon EFS Zoom Lens, f/3.5-5.6 IS. The Canon image stabilizer lens utilizes an aspherical lens to correct aberrations that may occur while taking photographs. The Canon EFS 18-55mm Lens creates a higher-quality zoom area. Due to a built-in circular aperture, backgrounds not in focus are textured nicely. The 2042B002 Canon EFS 18-55mm Lens retains its compact nature even though it uses more advanced technology than similar models. It is the lens to use when a slow-time shutter is required for taking photographs. The Canon Image Stabilizer Lens was created to fulfill the needs of photographers who require a unit that is lightweight and can still take quality pictures. It is suitable for use by both amateur and professional photographers.

Sharpness: This lens is very sharp, even on the edges, 18-28mm. Starting at 35mm, sharpness starts to fall becoming least sharp at 55mm. I've compared this lens to 17-55mm and 24-105mm L. On my comparison, I saw slightly better performance of the 18-55 over the 17-55 @18 (@17) mm. I saw no major sharpness advantage for the 24-105mm. At 55mm the 17-55mm is much better. Focus: It is fast with low noise. Manual focus is not feasible for the most part. No full time focus. The focus is *sometimes* inaccurate (could be a camera issue too). Macro: 18-55mm can be used at 25cm distance from subject, for a 1:3 magnification. Which is significantly better than the 1:6 of the 17-55mm. Distortions: CA is not a major problem, but worse than 17-55mm, especially on the edges. Barrel/pincushion distortion @18mm worse than 17-55mm but better for rest of the zoom range. Vignetting is not a problem >= f/5.6. Other features: Very useful and silent IS Lens is light and very compact All plastic Delicate focus mechanism

Kit Lens! Just move along

Okay. This is the the kit lens that comes with most canon DSLRs. The XSi, 40d and XS already have this. If you didn't buy the camera with this, I'd still suggest you move along. The lens is better than the older version that came with the Rebel XT or XTi, however it suffers from most of the same problems. It is flimsy. The build quality is fairly poor. There is no focus ring for manual, you just twist the end of the telescoping tube. The tube itself is quite wobbly when extended. The images aren't very sharp, and are low contrast. Although, admittedly, the images are a bit sharper than the regular 18-55. It does have Image Stabilization included for only a couple hundred bucks! That would run you another $400-$500 on most lenses. Sorry if the review sounds so negative, there's just not much to gush about this lens. Essentially, this is as cheap a lens as they can make to include with the cameras so you have at least something to take pictures with. If you want a cheap lens, by all means look at Canon's 50mm f/1.8. That, while being uber-cheap, still manages to produce some very sharp pictures, with better contrast., and is so fast (1.8!) that there is no need for IS. It usually runs less than $100, and while build quality is even worse, is all around a better choice.. I give it overall 3 stars. It isn't great, and there's so much more that could be worse, and it does have IS, so there's something.

I am very pleased with this lens. I have had my camera for several years but did not have this lens. It is a great addition and is great for standard picture taking.

Great video lens

The 18-55 mm IS STM lens is great for video. It smoothly & noiselessly glides from subject to subject. For stills the focus is lightning fast. Super sharp lens. At closer distances at 18mm, barrel distortion is very pronounced. I have not noticed it at normal distances. The plastic bayonet mount contributes to its light weight; but I prefer metal. The electronic manual focus takes getting used to. You have to have the camera on to focus & there are no stops at the ends of the focus travel. The focus ring is always free turning. The faster you turn it, the faster the lens focuses. Rotate the other way & the lens focuses the other direction. The electronic focus is an acceptable trade off for the super auto focus. The lens looks better in real life, but still looks like a kit lens. The hood (extra) shades well , but is unattractive

Cheap average lens

This lens feels cheap and basic, and noticeably lower quality compared to any camera body that it comes with. I thought mine came with sand in it, which really dampened the ownership experience for a while, but it turns out the circular flap that keeps particles out creates some friction with the moving front element, so there is some scratchy noise when zooming in and out. The pictures it takes have decent sharpness, but not comparable to more expensive lenses. The focusing speed is decent with bright and high-contrast subjects, but sometimes struggles in lower light. Manual focus is only possible with the AF is off, unlike some other lenses. There is no distance scale. The minimum focal distance is also good enough for some basic macro. The Image Stabilization is the saving grace for this lens, and is actually quite good at affording it some reasonable low light ability. But in my opinion the Image Stabilization should be inside the camera body like with many competitor models. I think this lens is fine for a beginner, or some casual outdoor photography. In the end the build quality might be bothersome, but the performance is good for its price.
