Campbell Hausfeld Electric Oil Free Tank Mounted 2 Gallon Air Compressor 2 5 2 2
Parts Issue for Campbell-Hausfeld Air Compressor I purchased this air compressor from Walmart 3 years ago. I bought it to be able to have a source of compressed air in a light weight portable unit that was easy to transport. It has met my expectations in that regard. You can use it to fill tires, use with a brad nailer, use for cleaning with compressed air, etc. It will not support larger air tools. Up until today, I have been happy with my purchase. The unit stopped working and I started looking for the cause. I first established the plug and the on/off switch were OK. I removed the outer shroud and inner shroud to expose the motor, etc. I put some pressure on the motor brushes and bingo, the motor started (I had the switch temporarily by passed). I re-assembled the unit and turned it on and the motor ran until it reached 100 psi and shut off. However, it stuttered a few times during the refill, so I knew the brushes would need to be replaced. I looked in the owner's manual at the parts list and became concerned when I did not see a listing for the brushes—only for a motor replacement!! I called Cambell-Hausfeld and spoke with their rep, only to be told the bad news, we don't sell the brushes, only the motor itself! This is like having the spark plugs go bad on your car and having the dealer tell you they will sell you a new engine, but no spark plugs. So be forewarned, if you buy this little compressor and the brushes wear down (and they will—they always do, you will not be able to replace them. I for one intend to make a practice of opening the box of future purchases to look at the manual to see what parts are available. I'm afraid Campbell-Hausfeld has just lost me as a customer, because it is outrageous to not have armature brushes readily available when needed. For comparison sake: Milwaukee power tools not only makes brushes available for their tools, they make them user accessible, without even opening the case! Which is one reason I am a devoted user of Milwaukee power tools. Back to the air compressor. It is a nice little unit and works well for it's intended purpose. But, unfortunately it's not going to be a tool that you can count on for the long haul. It is purposely engineered to fail and not be repairable (unless you are fortunate enough to find an electric motor repair shop that could modify a set of brushes to fit this motor). Noisy, slow, low capacity Perhaps I should have known that such a small compressor would not do much. But this unit really disappointed me. It takes forever to pump up the tiny tank and is horrendously noisy. I thought I would be able to air up a low car tire or two with it, and maybe run a few small air tools. So it seemed like a decent deal.Wrong! The tank does not hold enough to air up even ONE low automobile tire. So you end up needing to plug it in and let it refill the tank a few times per tire. And it takes so long to do it that you better have a good TV show you can go in and watch while you're waiting.I have a few cigarette-lighter powered portable tire inflators that are FAR faster than this unit!My advice is to shop for a better compressor. This thing is so bad that my son borrowed it and actually returned it. ;-) 05/25/2011
