    Works better than advertised

I've had many different inverters and the Cobras just work. And work well. I really like this one as the fan is not loud nor does it run on really light loads. This unit also has a REAL on and off switch, not a soft button. (The soft button trips off and fails to start if anything is plugged in. At least in many of the soft button inverters I've used) Believe me, if you know what I'm talking about I'm sure you agree. Anyway, I'm about to order a couple more of these for the RV and the other cars in the household. Really good for Laptop power supplies and such. No matter what brand, you don't want to pull 400 watts through your cigarette type power plug but for light duty it will be fine. For heavy duty use you need a solid connection to the battery and this unit comes with both. Lighter socket plug AND the direct to battery clamps. I highly recommend this if you need a good solid performer.

This worked great for plugging in a laptop and several chargers for gameboy/mp3/etc. Only needed the built in power port cords, no need to go straight to the battery posts for that kind of power.

I want to be able to run my laptop with the charger plugged into the inverter, and the inverter to be able to do both tasks: ran and charge at the same time while in my truck.
    by Peterc 7/7/2009
    • "Depends" This inverter sounds an alarm when I plug in the 45 watt charger for my Mac Book Air. I was advised this was a 'sine' issue, a type of electrical wave, I believe. Other folks (answering here) have no problems, but do not say which type of laptop they have. A less expensive Energizer charger has no problem accomplishing this= both charging and running the Mac laptop at the same time. Otherwise, this inverter works well with multiple other devices.

    • Ran two laptops on it through 1000 trip with no problems. I think laptops within the last few years draw less than 100 watts under normal use.

    • If your laptop is like most I have seen when you connect it to external power you plug your laptop into a special power supply cord and the other end of the power cord plugs into a standard wall type receptacle (120Volts). The only thing that would be different is you would plug that power supply cord into a receptacle on the inverter instead of a wall plug. Most laptops will run and charge simulataneously through their special power supply cord ( normally provided with the laptop). Make sure your laptop does not require over 400 watts (most do not)

    • Most laptops are under 100W - e.g. I have a 17" monster and it is listed at "MAX 90W" - so unless I have audio and video and birghtest screen, etc., it's going to use less. I'd say around 75W. In any event, you're almost certainly going to be able to use the cigarette lighter to do what you want to do. (And a direct-to-battery connection will handle up to 400W - I've made pasta and rice, and it works - YUM!!!)

    • Most laptop power supplies run on 75 to 150 watts, so this inverter will have no issues powering a laptop power supply, allowing you to use your laptop as usual.
      by NewMoonFarmer10/4/2010

    • Typical laptop power supplies are 80-100 watts, so this will provide plenty of power to operate and charge your laptop. Depending upon your battery and the power drawn by your laptop you may have to have the engine running when connected for long periods.

    • you are pushing the limit with this inverter,, OHMS law, says 400 watts is about 3.3 amps,, check the power on your laptop and see what the adapter reads.

    • The inverter comes with 2 sets of cables to connect input power. One to connect directly to a 12volt battery (with alligator clamps on the end) and the other cable will plug into a cigarette lighter /accessory receptacle in a car. Please read the manual though as there are restrictions on which one you use if you are going to load the converter to it maximum 400watts

    • YES - PLUS the cables to hook directly to the battery. Some DON'T, which is stupid. They connect in the back with screws - very easy to do. If I used this alot, I might buy a second unit - one to always keep plugged into the cigarette lighter for small appliances like laptops, and the other for heavier loads. Then you wouldn't have to keep switching the cables...
