Book Information

The following content was provided by the publisher.
Full of incredible characters, amazing athletic achievements, cutting-edge science, and, most of all, pure inspiration, "Born to Run "is an epic adventure that began with one simple question: "Why does my foot hurt? "In search of an answer, Christopher McDougall sets off to find a tribe of the world's greatest distance runners and learn their secrets, and in the process shows us that everything we thought we knew about running is wrong.
Isolated by the most savage terrain in North America, the reclusive Tarahumara Indians of Mexico's deadly Copper Canyons are custodians of a lost art. For centuries they have practiced techniques that allow them to run hundreds of miles without rest and chase down anything from a deer to an Olympic marathoner while enjoying every mile of it. Their superhuman talent is matched by uncanny health and serenity, leaving the Tarahumara immune to the diseases and strife that plague modern existence. With the help of Caballo Blanco, a mysterious loner who lives among the tribe, the author was able not only to uncover the secrets of the Tarahumara but also to find his own inner ultra-athlete, as he trained for the challenge of a lifetime: a fifty-mile race through the heart of Tarahumara country pitting the tribe against an odd band of Americans, including a star ultramarathoner, a beautiful young surfer, and a barefoot wonder.
With a sharp wit and wild exuberance, McDougall takes us from the high-tech science labs at Harvard to the sun-baked valleys and freezing peaks across North America, where ever-growing numbers of ultrarunners are pushing their bodies to the limit, and, finally, to the climactic race in the Copper Canyons. "Born to Run" is that rare book that will not only engage your mind but inspire your body when you realize that the secret to happiness is right at your feet, and that you, indeed all of us, were born to run.

Book description

Full of incredible characters, amazing athletic achievements, cutting-edge science, and, most of all, pure inspiration, Born to Run is an epic adventure that began with one simple question: Why does my foot hurt? In search of an answer, Christopher McDougall sets off to find a tribe of the world’s greatest distance runners and learn their secrets, and in the process shows us that everything we thought we knew about running is wrong.

Isolated by the most savage terrain in North America, the reclusive Tarahumara Indians of Mexico’s deadly Copper Canyons are custodians of a lost art.

Customer Product Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5★ by 5reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5★ by A life-changing read If you are one of the last 200 runners who have not read this book, you are missing out. You'll make back the cost of the book 100 times over with what you'll save on running shoes. If you are not a runner, read this book. It may make you want to run, or it may make you a vegetarian, or both. 08/18/2010
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Great Book. Great Book! If this book doesn't get you running... Then you must be dead. 07/14/2010
Rated 5 out of 5★ by An Inspirational Read A fellow runner recommended this book when he BLEW past me at a 5-mile challenge; just the year before, he was eating my dust! For anyone who is a runner, athlete, or simply a roadside afficionado, you will be motivated and inspired by McDougall's quest and by the Tarahumara way of life. The characters along the way offer complexity and humor to the story, too.McDougall's research is to be commended as he justifies the "proper" running techniques using scientific theory and biological study as support. You will be ready to trash your $100+ "cushiony" running shoes for a minimalist - or better yet, barefoot/5-toed slipper - upon hearing the latest studies from top researchers and athletes on injury prevention and maximizing performance.Get ready to be moved, uplifted, entertained, and educated by Born to Run.(Sorry if this review is choppy: my 6 and 3 year olds are *constantly* interrupting my train of thought as I try to write). 01/20/2011
