The shades were actually packed "full"; not compressed like I've seen on previous lamps I've bought elsewhere. The shades have a somewhat "marble" pattern; off-white to tan; very nice look.In reading some reviews, I was a little unsure of what the true color would be. They came as what I would call a Hershey bar brown; maybe a little darker. I fully intended to paint them so I didn't really care, but I think they'd maybe sell better in a more "classic" color/tone. I have a colonial theme going on so I sprayed them with flat black paint with no trouble; adhered well.All but the small accent light have "3-way" light switches. I did find it odd that it shipped with only 1 3-way bulb; the others were all single CF's. Not a big deal given that I consider the bulbs included as a "bonus", but it would have been nice to have (3) 3-way bulbs to match the lamps.I had read a review that mentioned the lamps being easy to "blow over" via wind from an open window, but I'd seriously doubt that. They are as sturdy / balanced as one would reasonably expect.I did give this item 4-stars, but I was temped to give it 5-stars -it's "good" all around, but idk, 5-stars for me requires a "wow" factor... 04/03/2013
