I've been on the lookout for a low cost, sturdy bookcase for about a year now. When I noticed this one in the store, I must say, I was a bit skeptical. Seeing as it is a do-it-yourself product, I was SHOCKED at how sturdy the unit is! It holds all of our college textbooks, as well as my boyfriend's large law school books - no bowing/bending at all. It does take a little bit to assemble (about 2 hours), though we took our time to ensure it was all correctly aligned. Assembly was very simple - only hammer/screwdrivers are needed. The Dark Cherry is beautiful. Overall, very impressed with the quality and value. Looks GREAT!

We’re very pleased. We purchased two of these bookshelves in cherry and have them on either side of our upstairs office. Great color, size, depth and height. Took a while to assemble but well worth it. I’ve added some photos.

After spending an hour searching the web and reading comments, I thought this piece looking promising based on the price and the reviews. I went to my nearby Walmart and decided to buy this bookshelf and give it a try. It took me about an hour to put together. Everything went very smoothly. Good quality. Good finish. No defects. All of the parts fit together nicely. My assembled shelf looks just like the picture. You do need to take your time to make sure that everything is flush and square. If you take this time, you will be pleased. A great addition to my home office.

Better than most other Sauder stuff

I have used many products by "Sauder" pre-fab put-together bookcases. This one is definitely a step up from the usual Sauder design. The back is the usual thin laminate cardboard, and the veneer is paper thin (so watch out for nicks and such) but otherwise, it looks nicer, and seems sturdier than other bookcases I have built. Better Homes and Gardens must have imposed some higher standards for these book cases. Once put together, I could still lift it a little on my own to move it into place, and I'm not very strong. The box itself is REALLY heavy, and I was unable to lift that on my own, so I took out the pieces and carried them up to the room where it was going to go. I assembled it in that room. The assembly went better than usual. The pre-drilled holes were all in the right places for once, and everything lined up great. That was a new experience for me!

Bought this in cherry and I am so happy with my purchase. Matches my furniture wonderfully, wasn't difficult to put together and it's surprisingly sturdy and looks great. Maybe it's not solid wood, but it looks like a $200+ bookcase. I was also happy with the delivery time as it arrived several days before the estimated date.

    • A. I've made several DIY furniture pieces in the past. The complete box is heavy and you will probably need help to move to the room you want it in. Once you open the box and are dealing with individual pieces it's fairly easy. Just remember to go slow, work on a clean surface, DON'T scrape the nice finish across the floor, and read the directions at least three steps ahead as it can help you better understand what you need to be doing at any particular time.

    • A. It took the maintenance person at my mom's assisted living about 2 hours to assemble. I think there are a lot of pieces. Be aware that the box is very heavy and you will probably need someone's help to move and assemble it. It is certainly worth the money and effort.

    • A. The box will probably be your biggest problem. It weighs around 85 pounds. You could have WalMart help you get it to the car and open the box while it's still in the car and take the pieces in to the house that way. Otherwise the instructions are clear and easy to follow. You'll need a hammer, a #2 phillips screwdriver and a straight blade screwdriver. Nothing else! As you tighten screws listen for the creeking sound as the screw finally seats down tight. You can over tighten the screws and strip them out.

    • A. I put it together pretty much by myself, and I'm pretty much in the same situation as you. I had to prop the side panels up against a wall on one side and a piece of furniture on the other side to put the case together. Things lined up nicely though, and that made it all the easier. Do yourself a favor and get a small electric drill to use- there are a lot of screws! I did have a little help from my 9-yr-old.

    • A. yes ma'am. The most difficult part is the box is heavy...once you get it unloaded in your home (Walmart will help you load it in your vehicle)...slide each piece out of the box onto your living room carpet taking care not to chip the edges. Once you get the pieces spreading out you shouldn't have any difficulty putting it together. Be careful and roll it on its side and then finally stand it up and walk it to the wall where you want it. Be sure and locate two studs in the wall behind the bookcase near the top and screw two screws in the wall near the top to keep it from falling over. You should find this in the instructions. Good luck and enjoy.

    • A. It is too heavy for many people to lift while in the box. After it is put together, I suggest sliders (I used the sticky side type, not the nail on) to move it around. Better have help to stand it up if you are weak.

    • A. No, the back is not finished. They give you a folded piece of wood-looking cardboard to nail to the back, but only the inside facing the shelves is finished. It would look ok without the backing, but I still wouldn't use it as a room divider as the back of the shelf isn't very finished. It's meant to be standing up against a wall.

    • A. Would NOT look good from the back! the back is folded so you see the creases until the shelf has items on it. The back side isnt finished and you have 2 pieces that have to be nailed to the shelf so when looking at it from the back you see the nails and its not pretty to look at. Its extremly flimsy without the back and i wouldnt try to use it without the back pieces for safety reasons. Hope this helps.
