I had majicJack for about 2 years. The quality of majicJack has really deteriorated over that time. Many dropped calls and people not being able to get in touch with me. Moreover, their customer support is non-existent, so the issues could not be resolved. A few days ago I got fed up with majicJack and I decided to try Basictalk. Since it has no contract, I had nothing to really lose. And what a difference! The setup was extremely simple, the calls now are crystal clear, has all the features you will ever need (911, voicemail, caller id, call waiting), has an actual customer support and all of that for 10 bucks a month (with taxes and fees it's about $12.70/month for me). And on top of that, no start-up costs whatsoever! Al in all, I highly recommend.

I didn't know what to expect from Basic Talk after ordering it online and for only $9.88 on sale. The next day, my honey and I picked up the order at the service desk with no long wait...and quickly. After getting home, he installed (just plug it in as instructed) it and within just a few minutes, there was dial tone. So easy to register online and we had the choice of keeping the old number or getting a new one...so we picked a new number and start fresh (so no unwanted calls...if you know what I mean...LOL). It's been about 2 weeks now, and no problems whatsoever! I also cancelled service with Vonage and I won't miss paying the $37.00 monthly payment. The representative was trying hard to keep me as a customer and tried to offer me a good deal for staying. I declined after having attempted to reduce my phone bill previously. Anyone looking to save money on basic phone service, switch over to Basic Talk and you'll have no regrets!

Trying to budget like everyone else, decided to try it out. Purchased the item at a local Walmart for 9.99+ tax. There was only 2-3 boxes left hanging on the shelf of maybe 20. The setup of this device was very easy. Before I plugged everything in, I went online to activate everything first. Then, waited for about 15-30 minutes to plug everything in for setup. It will ask you if you want a new number or change to your old number. I just wanted a home phone for emergencies other than a cell. At first, I had thought that I would have to run a phone line and connect it to my wall outlet, this is not the case. You will not need your wall jack. I do have a phone connected to my old wall jack so I do not miss any calls until everything is transferred. Everything is connected to your router, therefore no running wires. I am hoping that they do not raise the prices since so many people are using it.

I saw where a minimum of 30kbps is needed for this to work? I have 5 mbps with att.net. Is that fast enough for this to work? Will this work with exede satellite internet service?

    • A. Please keep in mind dialup Internet @ maximum speed runs at 56 Kbps, so yes you will be just fine with your AT&T Net Speed. I use WISP (wireless internet service provider) and it works great @ 1.5 Mbps up and down with ping of 9 ms. As for Excede (WILDBLUE) satellite Internet it will not work with any VoIP except one Excede (WILDBLUE) offers that they **claim will work only with their system. Furthermore, no satellite Internet service will work with any VOIP; due to amount of time (lag/ping) it takes from the dish on your roof to send/receive data to the satellite orbiting approximately 25,000 miles above the Earth. Normally satellite Internet has a lag/ping time of 900-1300 ms whereas cable/dsl has approximately 50 ms lag time. In addition, ALL satellite ISPs either have a daily download limit or monthly download limit . It is called their Fair Access Policy (FAP) and should you "excede" download limit your speeds are reduced to slower than dialup for approx. 48 hours. In addition satellite Internet is a shared network, so during peak hour usage you so called high speed satellite Net slows to a crawl usually not much faster than dialup. There are currently 100s of online complaints against Excede (WILDBLUE.) As a former satellite Internet customer/victim I recommend if possible to avoid satellite Internet! I reside in a rural area and thankfully WISP is available. Wireless Internet Service Providers have towers in many rural areas now. The wireless signal is sent via radio frequency to an antenna mounted on your roof. It has a lower ping/lag time than cable Internet or DSL and there is *no download limit at all!

    • A. To use BasicTalk service you need a high-speed Internet connection with a minimum speed of 30kbps, such as cable or DSL, from an Internet Service Provider (ISP). BasicTalk does not supply Internet service. You must arrange for Internet service from an Internet Service Provider (ISP) in your area. Please note, BasicTalk does not recommend or support using satellite or wireless Internet technology.

    • A. Yes 5 mbps is plenty fast enough I have a 1 mbps connection to the internet and it works flawlessly, please remember that a fast dial-up connection was 54 kbps. In regards to satellite as long as connection is active I believe it should work but you would have to check with the provider.

    • A. 5 MB/S actually works out to 500 KB/S (actual speed) downstream, and 77 KB/S (actual speed) upstream, so yes, you have plenty of speed. I have the same with AT&T.

    • A. I am currently using phone jacks and extensions in other rooms. You can use it on up to 1,000 feet of installed home phone wiring. However, if you have DSL internet service, you still want to use the filters for each phone. You plug a phone cord from the Basic Talk device into one of your home phone jacks, and the signal should route through all of your home phone lines into the other jacks. Important Note: If you have a dedicated DSL internet line coming from the phone company box on the outside of your home and into your house, when you hook your basic talk device into a phone jack in your home, remove all of the filters for the phones, and be sure to DISCONNENT the regular phone line going into your home if it's connected to the outside phone company box. This is simple to do. Open the box and look to see if the modular plug is plugged in. If it is, then disconnect it. This is usually located to the left of where your phone line is connected. Each dedicated phone line has its own modular jack and plug. I used to have two phone lines in my home, but no more. I made use of the secondary line for my DSL connection. My Basic Talk is routed through my home phone wiring, but remember, that line is connected at the phone company box on the outside of my home. This way, there is absolutely NO interference to the DSL service, and I do NOT have to use the DSL filters for each phone. Works great and the phone service is CRYSTAL CLEAR. Also, by disconnecting your regular phone line at the phone company box on the outside of your home, it prevents the Basic Talk phone line from picking up any interference in the phone line going to the phone company's switching station, as well as keeping your Basic Talk phone signal on a line that is 1,000 feet or less. Hope this helps and can be understood.

    • A. While you can only use one phone line with your BasicTalk account, you can use multiple phones with the service, although not more than 5. For more information please see the Support section on our website, https://support.basictalk.com/app/center/technical/
