About the author

Biography of Garten, Ina

Food Network celebrity Ina Rosenberg Garten was born in Brooklyn, New York on February 2, 1948. She grew up in Stamford, Connecticut and studied economics at Syracuse University. In 1968, Garten married her husband Jeffrey. She earned her MBA at George Washington University and worked in the White House Office of Management and Budget. In 1978, on a whim she bought a specialty food store in the Hamptons called Barefoot Contessa.

Garten's subsequent culinary techniques were acquired by reading cookbooks and from her mentors, Eli Zabar and Martha Stewart. Garten is known for emphasizing fresh ingredients and promoting a sophisticated yet simple style. Garten sold her store in 1996 and went on to write The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook in 1999, which was a bestseller. She has since written several more, including Barefoot in Paris and Barefoot Contessa at Home. She also writes columns for House Beautiful, Martha Stewart Living, and O, The Oprah Magazine, and she penned the forewords to Kathleen King's Tate's Bake Shop Cookbook and Rori Trovato's Dishing with Style. Garten has been the host of the Food Network's popular Barefoot Contessa program since 2002. Her title, Barefoot Contessa Foolproof, made The New York Times Best Seller List in 2013.

Garten's most recent book, Barefoot in Paris, was just as popular as her earlier best-selling Barefoot Contessa books. Now she's back here at her country home, with recipes for casual, contemporary comfort food, from Fennel-Stuffed Loin of Pork to Chocolate Cupcakes with Peanut Butter Icing. Each chapter of this lavishly illustrated book opens with a mini-essay on a different aspect of entertaining or welcoming guests, from "Designing a Kitchen" to "The Important Dinner", and most of the recipes include helpful tips on ingredients, substitutions, advance preparation, and the like. Sure to be in demand, this is recommended for most collections.
