Popcorn Popper

This popcorn popper is the same I used when I was a kid. I use olive oil and I put salt before the corn pops up. The salt spreads more evenly this way. I like the price of this product, similar stainless steel products in other stores cost twice as much. This one at walmart is a great deal. I received the product via sitetostore here in Orem, Utah with no problems. It can take some time to arrive, but it's free shipping!

Best popcorn popper going

I owned 3 Whirlypop popcorn poppers before buying this popper. The Whirlypop has plastic gears and wears out quickly. I am a stainless steel freak, my cookware is all stainless steel. When I saw that this was stainless, I knew it was the one for me! The Back to Basics corn popper is the best one going. This is my second one, my first had a glass window and became broken through the years, this one is completely stainless and produces popcorn that rivals movie theater popcorn. I have tried them all and this is by far the best on the market today.

Good popcorn... Bad pan design
3/11/2009

Customer review by PatInAlabama

This popper makes excellent popcorn and we will never go back to microwave popcorn. The pan itself is a real pain due to poor design or lack of tight quality controls in the manufacturing process. From reading other reviews I see some were lucky to receive poppers that actually fit together properly. We weren't. After finally getting the lid on the pan, the lids wouldn't seat correctly. We finally got it to work after some tweaking and now I just wash the pan without removing the lid. Sometimes popping corn is hassle-free and other times I have to hold the lid in place with a pot holder while turning the crank. This popper is a great idea but there are ways to improve the design of how the lid attaches to the pan and still have an affordable price. For $39, I expected a better quality popper. I disagree with others that expections should be low for a "cheap" popper. I've purchased quality 8/10 stainless steel pans and even pressure cookers for around this price when shopping around for best deals. I would still reccomend it those shopping for stainless steel because it's design is about the same as all the other stovetop poppers out there. Still, if you don't care about having stainless steel, shop around and find an aluminum one for about 1/2 the cost.

Poor value due to construction

Expected a lot more than received. The appearance was top notch but that,s where it ends. The top will not stay closed, poor engineering design1 The internal blades are located to high off the bottom so they do not stir the corn kernels except when they are clumped. When you attempt to empty the lids do not 0pen far enough to empty completely. The unit is heavy enough, but for safety you need to keep both hands on the handle. The design for the retention post to fit in the hole provided in the side so poor that you can barely get the lids to fit properly. This is a very poorly designed lid assembly. But other that those problem it looks nice, however I was purchasing it to work. I will be returning it!

Back to Basic Popper

This product is stainless steel with a heavy bottom. However the sides are very thin. The hole for the rod for the stirring mechanism is created by punching out a hole of the right diameter. This left a sharp edge on the inside of the pan which has the potential to cut a person while cleaning the pan. The one that we purchases also had machine marks on the side (creases) caused during manufacturing. The lid is poorly made and rather flimsy. The design of the lid attachment could be better with regard to removing it for cleaning and reattaching. The hinges are a tab of metal rolled over a rod. Since it is had to have a well aligned lid, the ones on our pot caught on the edges of the pan when closing. A moderate amount of force was needed to close the lid. The stirring mechanism is also borderline construction and quality but it does work.

disappointing product

I wish I had paid attention to some of the reviews I read and not bought this product. The lid is very hard to get on properly. Also the first time I used it, I put the amount of oil the directions said and it wasn't enough to keep the popcorn from burning. I really had to scrub hard and still you can see where it was burned. The popcorn does get more flavoriful the more the popper is used, but the lid is so hard to manage I have bought a stir crazy popper to use.

I like that this product is made from stainless steel instead of just aluminum and it pops corn just fine. However, the lid on this popper is ill-fitting and has come off two out of the three times I have used it when attempting to empty the popcorn into a bowl. Additionally, I have to hold one side of the lid down as I am turning the crank because it stays open and the corn will pop out if I don't. I definitely would NOT recommend this product.

while I haven't tried the competetors, popper, i've owned the older-style BTB popper with the plastic window on top. Very good addition to delete this window and make entire top stainless, due to old window being prone to breaking in short order. I just got two more of these for gifts, and neither had an ill-fitting top. They were a firm tight fit, wich would be better than loose fit.

The lid came with some kind of problem since it doesn't close totally on the side that doesn't have the hook to close. It also came with spots on top that looked like acid spots, came out with washing. I have to hold the lid that doesn't close properly, will try to see if it can be adjusted, if not, maybe will return it.

The popper makes fantastic popcorn. The only issue I have had was the placement of the side pin as it was not bent at the correct angle to make putting it together and taking it apart as easy as it should have been. Overall I am very pleased with it. I am looking forward to alot of use from this product.

Great Popcorn

This popper makes great popcorn. Better tasting than air-pop, but not as greasy as microwave. I use olive oil, and just a little salt. I deducted one star due to the lid did not fit securely at top, but it was nothing that a pair of pliers and a few inappropriate words couldn't fix :)

Product does a good job of cooking popcorn, however, I am concerned about the durability. The two lids are very flimsy and I had difficulty assembling the product after its first cleaning. There must be a better method for closing the lids. bhw

Better than a microwave
2/12/2010

Customer review by auhaus

I am not disappointed with this popper in any way shape or form. I was a little apprehensive after reading the reviews from buyers that had problems with the lid fitting properly. I have not had any difficulty getting my lid to fit or stay on. The lid is a snug fit I will admit, but I haven't found it that difficult to attach. Popping time is about the same as a microwave brand. The popcorn that I have made with it produces no burnt kernels, something that I have found rare with microwave varieties. This result may be because the popcorn is fresher or the heat is distributed more evenly. Whatever the reason, I find this method to be a better alternative.

We have the aluminum one and have used it for more the 10 years. We really love it, Wanted the Stainless Steel one, but it isn't made as well as the aluminum one. The top fits poorly and the turner un-screws when you go backwards and won't turn in the oppisite direction. I was very disappointed with this.
