In bestselling author C.J. Box's "Back of Beyond," Cody Hoyt, although a brilliant cop, is an alcoholic struggling with two months of sobriety when his friend Hank Winters turns up dead in a remote mountain cabin. At first it looks like the suicide of a man who's fallen off the wagon, but Cody knows Hank better than that. As Cody digs deeper into the case, all roads lead to foul play. After years of bad behavior with his department, Cody in no position to be investigating a homicide. But he will stop at nothing to find out who murdered Hank. And why...

When clues found at the scene link the murderer to an outfitter leading tourists on a multiday wilderness horseback trip in Yellowstone National Park, Cody is desperate to get on the trail and stop the killer in his tracks. There's only one catch: his own son, Justin, is among the tourists. Now, in one of the most remote places on earth, Cody must enter a deadly cat-and-mouse game with a ruthless enemy who seems to know his every move...and is hell-bent on destroying the only important thing in Cody's life he has left.

A disgraced cop with a history of alcoholism, Cody Hoyt is also a bulldog investigator. When his AA sponsor turns up dead, Cody determines that the killer is one of 14 dudes on a week long expedition in Yellowstone National Park; Cody's son is also on the trip. While struggling to figure out who and why, and where they are in the wilderness, Cody also searches for redemption on behalf of his friend.

Following 2008's Blue Heaven, this is the author's second stand-alone thriller to take place in the wild. As Box has shown in his Joe Pickett series, he knows life and death in the back country like few other writers today. [125,000-copy first printing; ten-city tour; see Prepub Alert, 3/14/11.]

Review by Library Journal (2011-10-01)

Box, author of the Joe Pickett novels (Cold Wind), features in this ripsnorter two wildly dissimilar narrators-one an alcoholic lawman, the other a nerdy teenage girl. Though a determined and skilled investigator, Cody Hoyt's disease makes him, at best, unpredictable. When Cody finds out that the person who murdered his AA sponsor might also be after his son, he frantically gives chase. Unfortunately, the unknown killer is hidden in plain sight among a group that includes perceptive, young Gracie Sullivan on a wilderness camping trip in Yellowstone National Park-the titular back of beyond.

Cody's reckless pursuit, Gracie's redlining danger-meter, and Box's keen descriptions of nature result in a balanced and immensely enjoyable listen. Holter Graham's crisp, clean narration reliably differentiates Cody's cigarette-stained gruffness from the raised Canadian accents of the upper Midwest locals and admirably captures the regionalisms of other characters. An excellent choice for public libraries.
