A standard crib mattress. :) I use to have a convertible crib that I used for my 1st girl but when I had my 2nd child I got this toddler bed for my first born. Then when my convertible crib was recalled I got another toddler bed. Its a really quick fix and works great! No need to buy new bedding or mattress. My girls are 2 & 3. I will definitely be using these for another year then moving them up to TWINS

Toddler beds use a crib size mattress. This is really great because as the toddler transitions from crib to toddler bed you can just use their crib mattress from their Baby Bed instead of purchasing a new one.

You can take the rails off but you will see holes on the side rails and headboard where they attach. You'd definitely want to fill it in with a wood plug or something and then paint it because it would look wrong. I use to debate whether to take the rails off too but honestly its a toddler bed and it doesn't bother anyone else! You would see the (screw) holes where the rail attaches to the side (mattress support) and then there are 2 screw that attach it to the headboard

The box the unassembled bed comes in is not that big width-wise but it is as long as the crib mattress. The box dimensions are 4.13" x 53.7" x 13" and it weighs about 29 pounds. The bottom has slats where the mattress rests.

The base consists of wooden slats. It would fit in the backseat while in the box. We didn't have any trouble fitting it in our car.
