About this item
Feast your eyes on this huge model of the largest airship ever built. At over five feet long, you can delight in every detail of its realistic design. Handmade of wood with over 600 joints, the craftsmanship of this model is stellar.
Nearly as big as the Titanic, this German airship was the ultimate in travel. Before the growth of commercial airlines, this graceful dirigible known as the Hindenburg flew over 2,600 people across the Atlantic from Germany to Rio and New York. It stretched 776 feet form tip to tail and had a top speed of 80 mph, cutting the time of a trans-Atlantic trip by two-thirds.
In a span of 37 seconds, its glory was reduced to ashes in a fiery crash at Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey on May 6, 1937.
At the time, The Germans led the world in the technology of dirigibles, and the Hindenburg was its showpiece. You can see inside the windows of this model and feel the satin canvas fabric stretched over the frame. Look close and see the four rotors that span 50 scale feet. Due to their massive size, these airships needed to be filled with volatile hydrogen, because helium would not give enough lift. With this immaculate model of the Graf Zeppelin Hindenburg, the grace and majesty of the original lives on in this showpiece for your home. Ships assembled.
