Maintaining your own supply of purified water ensures you'll have clean water for drinking and food prep for you, your family, and your pets. The Augason Farms Water Treatment and Storage kit includes everything you need to store and treat 55-gallons of water. The treatment drops kill odor-causing bacteria, enhance the taste of stored potable water, and control the buildup of slime in the water barrel. The siphon hose and hand pump make accessing your water easier than ever. We’ve also included a must-have barrel lid opener. Don’t leave your water security to chance. As a general rule of thumb, it is recommended that you are prepared with a minimum of one gallon of water per person per day. TIP: When storing water barrels, it is recommended that barrels are not stored directly on cement or in constant sunlight, nor that water be allowed to freeze. It is also recommended that barrels be stored no more than two barrels high for safety purposes.

water does not &quot; go bad&quot; or &quot;expire&quot; ever. Bacteria, if it is present in either your water or the barrel may grow if there is a source of food for it in the barrel. Treating the water you put in the barrel with a half teaspoon of hyperchlorite bleach per 5 gallons of water will kill most any bacteria present. The bleach will become inert over time and will not make the water harmful to drink or affect the taste appreciably . To be doubly safe you could retreat the water upon opening. I also keep Water purification filters on hand. A sawyer filter will ensure the purity of an almost unlimited amount of water (10&#39;s of thousands of gallons) stored this way and will filter out both bacteria and virus if you have the correct device, The cost of one is well under 100 dollars.

Under ideal conditions, 50 F to 85 F and with sodium hypochlorite drops added to the mixture, sealed and stored in a dark clean area, the water will last 5 years as they claim. If you slosh the container and fol-low the directions letting a small amount out of the ports and then not opening the water even for a moment.

After quite a bit of reading there is agreement that if the water is treated with the water purification kit that comes with the water barrel it will keep drinkable for 5 years. If you fill the barrel with water out of the tap it is already treated and will keep for 6 months and will then need to be emptied and refilled. Keep the barrel out of the sun and in a cool dark place.

Up to 5 years if using the water treatment drops for long term storage.

With the Aquamira treatment that comes with it up to 5 years. Aquamira told me after that you could re-treat the water again if needed.

2-3 years, any longer and it will begin to develop an aftertaste.

About 5 years but water does become stale after awhile. The taste can be improved by aerating it, (pouring it back and forth between two containers for a few minutes).

How long can the water be stored under ideal conditions?

I've been told by a friend the lid does not come off. I'm going to call the company next week and repost.

The top of the barrel is NOT supposed to come off. Use the tool to open the bung plugs only. The tool can be used to open the tops of 5 gallon paint buckets.

No sorry Virg I just posted my review to make sure people found out ahead of time that it does not.

The lid does not come off. The wrench is used to tighten the plugs that close up the top. Mine came with two plugs and the wrench fits into the plug and you turn it clock-wise to close the plugs.

The tool is for the bung, the cap that is threaded. Removing the large plastic top, not really a wise idea since it is sealed for a reason.
The threads on the top should allow you to remove the cap, if it will not come off with the tool or gets stripped the option left if try really hard to turn it and hope the threads hold up but if they strip you have 90 days to return it.

Is the lid supposed to come off with the tool provided?

ALL water storage containers would need to be washed out, filled with a small amount of water, rolled and slashed and then dumped. This insures for our own safety and the peace of mind, we have covered all the bases. Pretty sure the company who makes these would never take an extra step to make sure there is no residue in the container, Dust etc.

I dont know that any would come 'sterile' ever. They are molded and popped out and stacked. Always rinse with bleach etc before first use if you are using for potable water.

They have never been used for something else, if thats what you mean.

I've purchased 13 of these now, and they come perfectly clean and ready to fill. If you're concerned about it, you can easily put a gallon or two of water inside and move the barrel around to clean the inside. The barrel itself is pretty light weight.

I always wash/rinse out anything from a store/distributor.

Great, came with all things needed to open. The water treatment bottles and pump are a great PLUS with this purchase! Maybe a drum dolly for purchase would have made it even better for when after it is prepared (filled with water). Drum dolly with wheels much like the photo provided.

Great product!

This product will hold a sufficient amount of water to provide for a family of four for five days easily. Make sure to put it in a sheltered spot and cover it so as to avoid direct exposure to sunlight (this will help avoid bacterial growths). Unit comes with water purification treatment.

Don't overlook the need for water in an emergency.

I order a lot of items from Walmart.com and normally do not take the time to rate the product but felt compelled to write a review based on this item and the support service I received. First, I ordered this storage kit with some other items. The other items arrived pretty quickly as usual but noticed that the water storage kit was no where to be seen. I waited an extra day...just in case the delivery people made a mistake...hey we are all human. Well, the next day came and went. I never had a problem before with any previous orders so I search endlessly for a number to contact on the Walmart site. Well, it appears there is no number, you have to EMAIL them. I am thinking...this is going to be a nightmare. So on I went and filled out an email stating I never received my water kit. After hitting the send button...I sat wondering if they will ever get it and when they would respond. The next day, I am checking my emails as usual and noticed there was one from Walmart....it stated they received my email..checked into it and discovered that the water storage kit was lost in transit. LOST IN TRANSIT...what?..lol...this is a very large item and it comes boxed...how do you lose something like this in transit? Anyway...in the same email, Walmart stated that a replacement water kit is being ordered and would be delivered shortly. Well I received the water kit just a couple days after that. I was impressed!! The water storage kit is a great deal. It comes with the everything you need to store the water. [water stabilizer, pump and wrench to open and close the top openings] I have searched many sites and the cost is comparable and I will probably order another one from Walmart. Very pleased with the product and Walmart customer service (even though I did not talk with anyone) with how they replaced the "lost in transit" product with lightning speed! I'm still in shock at how fast they responded!!

Emergency Water Storage Kit

Easy to move around til you put water in it. I put mine on a furniture mover dolly before I filled it, so if I do need to move it I won't break my back trying. The included wrench is not for popping the top off I discovered after a few minutes trying (the lid is fused), it's for undoing the caps on top. The 2 "key" extrusions on the side fit into the notches in the caps, then twist.

Great value. Buying 11 of the Coleman 5 gallon containers would have cost $70 more. Although it would have been easier to distribute around the house, this wasn't a big deal.

Great for emergency prep

I bought one of these and decided that with a household of three people that we should have a bucket for each person. They are sturdy and easy to assemble the pump. Make sure you rinse them out before you fill them. We are going to store them under the stairs where they will stay cool and protected in case there is an earthquake (we live in SoCal) and need to make access to them.

Perfect for water storage

Walmart did a great job delivering the container to my house, real quick and right to my front door. It came boxed up and everything I was expecting in the box was there; the barrel, pump, wrench and water treatment chemicals. I didn't have to go out and buy anything extra.

I placed the barrel in my side yard, out of the sun and covered with a tarp to keep it clean. I hope I never need to use it but I know for the next five years, I have water available in-case the big hits.

The pump is complete and easy to use. The chemicals are supplied and also easy to use. I would recommend this barrel as it is good insurance if you ever need water in a pinch. Great price too and cheaper than Costco's barrel.

Water Storage Container - 55 gal.

I received the item one day early, thank you. It is a great way of storing emergency water at home or for a water source in the barn or vacation site. The box is large, but light weight. I cleaned the barrel with Clorox and water, dumped it out, refilled it with water and tested the pump which works great. This is the perfect way to store emergency water at home or as a water source in the barn or vacation site. It is very heavy when filled and I don't recommend trying to move it filled with water.

Great water storage for home or barn

I ordered one of these water storage barrels to add to my water storage capacity. FedEx delivered the item on Saturday!  Came in undamaged and all items included. I built an elevated platform and filled the barrel to the top. No leaks or bulges. Bung hole caps fit tightly. Good seal. I wrapped the barrel in black plastic, so it wouldn't be so noticeable in my garage and to further protect against bacteria. Augason Farms told me the heat and cold would not affect the barrel in any way (it gets close to 100 degrees everyday in the Summer). I will be ordering 2 more of these. Cannot beat the product for the price. I ordered a 100 gallon storage tank and it was almost 3 x the price of this barrel. This barrel is marked on the barrel up to 55 gallons, but when filled to the top holds approx. 60 gallons. I am very pleased with the product and recommend it to anyone wanting to be prepared. Thank you Augason Farms and Walmart. Another good shopping experience!

I have not yet put water in the barrel. I wanted to let it "air out" for a few days prior to filling it since it arrived with a bit of a "new plastic" smell.
The box arrived in excellent condition on exactly the day it was promised. The price at Walmart is better than anywhere else when you consider the free shipping. I'm planning on purchasing more of these for family members.
