I originally intended this to store spools of thread and all associated sewing supplies but after assembling all the compartments ( the horizontal strips are not adjustable, and the height of individual sections are fixed ) by placing the vertical spacers, I realized the thread spools had to be of a certain size to fit laying down or on end. The lid took most of the thread spools and I put the larger spools in the deeper lower compartment. Soon however it became clear that many more types of items could be stored: buttons, collar stays, tools, pins, etc.
All in all a functional design, the side compartments flip down to reveal more compartments, again adjustable by placing the supplied spacers. Interlocks prevent spillage although one must remember to fasten each.
Very satisfactory and holds an enormous selection with ease.
