This works wonderfully for making small batches of rice. And I love the steam basket provided. One thing you should know is that when it says six "cups" it means the plastic cup included, not a true measuring cup. Their measuring cup actually equals about 3/4 of a measuring cup. In short, you put in 2 1/4 measuring cups of uncooked white rice and get 4 1/2 measuring cups of cooked white rice. If you exceed this amount it will boil over.

I reviewed a number of rice cookers on-line before I decided to purchase the Aroma 6-cup rice cooker. I mostly chose this model because the price was great and I liked the color and features. Also, I do not need a huge capacity rice cooker and I do not have the counter space for a larger model. I must say that I was forewarned by many reviewers of the tendancey of all small rice cookers to spew starch out of the steam vent and mine does just that. So far I have only cooked 1 cup of rice at a time so I can only imagine how much starch will come out the vent if I cook more than 1 cup. By the way, the 1-cup measure that comes with the cooker is only 3/4 of a cup, but you get 1.5 cups of cooked volume out of it. It does make a mess of the counter and the floor if you place the cooker too close to the edge of the counter. I place mine at the back of the counter with a paper towel on the counter which helps absorb much of the mess. I initially thought that part of the problem might be the cheap rice I purchased, which has a higher starch content than good quality rice. I tried rinsing my rice until the water ran clear before I cooked and this did help a little with the starch mess, but not much. I also tried cooking brown rice and that helped a lot. The starch content of the rice definately has an impact on the mess that comes out the steam vent. If you cook brown rice, you will need almost 2 cups of water to 3/4 cups of rice. The thing that really cuts down on the spewing starch is using the steam tray to cook vegetables at the same time your are making rice. The steam tray effectively blocks the spewing starch. The vegetables come out well done as long as I used plenty of water for the rice. My other complaint is that you need quite a lot more water per cup of rice than the directions suggest. The first two times I used 3/4 cup rice to 1 cup water, the rice came out dry and slightly undercooked (i.e. crunchy). I have increased the amount of water to 1 1/3 cups and the rice is much better. On a positive note, the rice cooks faster than they suggest in the directions (usually 10-12 mins). The unit is very snazzy looking and easy to clean. The little plastic spatula that comes with the unit is a real help to stir rice and serve rice and veggies and it fits nicely in the handle of the unit for safe keeping. You do have to unplug the unit to turn it off, but that is not really a big deal and here in TN it is best to leave appliances unplugged when you go out anyway in case of a lightening storm. I did try the warmer feature once and if you leave it on warmer mode for more than 15 minutes, the rice on the bottom tends to dry out. I am generally pleased with the unit, but I probably would not purchase it again. I picked it up in the store and there was no S&H charge, so the whole until only cost me $18.95 which you really can't beat!

This little cooker has changed my life by making meals easier. I cook for two and I used to slave over rice dishes since they always use to stick to the pan. Now, I throw the ingredients onto the cooker, click the switch and that's it! This litttle guy cooks it for you, turns off to warmer when done and you have a DELICIOUS meal ready and waiting for you. I even made awesome seafood paella with this cooker! You can also steam veggies on the top tray. I use this all the time because the food comes out great and you can eat healthier since it steams the food and cooks healthy grains like whole grain rice and quinoa. (Uses a non-stick spray on bottom of cooker for easier cleaning after.) I highly recommend this for ease of use, healthier eating and time saved slaving over the stove. I am even buying one for my friend for Christmas. BTW, I do NOT work for whoever makes this product, nor was I paid for this review. I just really liked this item so much I logged on to write a review.

  • A. it cooks brown rice real good. Just add a little bit more water than if you would with white rice. Brown rice tends to drink more water. and let it simmer in warm setting for atleast 5-10 minutes. and you'll have a perfect brown rice.

From the picture, it looks metal or coated with a nonstick coating. Either of which would be preferable to plastic... Thanks.

  • A. It switches from the COOK switch to the keep warm switch when the rice is done. However, I recommend that you keep and eye on it and when it switches to warm you unplug it because if not, since it's got the lid on and is being kept warm it's creating steam and is essentially cooking the rice more.
