Once in a great while a movie comes along that truly grips and uplifts its audiences. Such a movie is "An Officer And A Gentleman," a timeless tale of romance, friendship and growth. Loner Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) enters Officer Candidate School to become a Navy pilot and in thirteen tortuous weeks he learns the importance of discipline, love and friendship. Louis Gossett, Jr. won an Academy Award for his brilliant portrayal of the tough drill instructor who teaches Zack that no man can make it alone. And while Gossett tries to warn the young officer about the local girls who will do anything to catch themselves pilot husbands, Zack eventually learns to love one (Debra Winger) while his fellow candidate, a memorable character portrayed by David Keith, struggles with a very different fate. "An Officer And A Gentleman" is a rich and satisfying story with moving performances that will stay with you long after the film has ended.

Audio Commentary, Featurettes, Photo Gallery.

"'An Officer and a Gentleman': 25 Years Later", "Return to Port Townsend", "True Stories of Military Romance", "The Music of 'An Officer and a Gentleman'", "Gere and Gossett: Hand-to-Hand Combat".

O.K. I realize I'm one of the FEW (no disrespect!) that thought this movie was a soggy sack of state fair cheese curds! I've seen (almost) every movie Richard Geer and Debra Winger ever made and this (to me) stinks like royal blue--cheese.It isn't Geer,Winger,Lou Gosset Jr. or the supporting cast, it's the story and the script. You don't have to be a supernatural sleuth to figure this out-from the first scene you got 'it'--along with every predictable 'salty tough',more sap than a syrup truck 'scene' the actors 'telegraph'. Its better than a game of childhood 'phone tag' --listen for a couple minutes and you'll (I'll) figure out the next....oh......HOUR! Minus the paper cups, string and a whole lot of mumbling......The women in this movie are hyperactive (if you know what I mean;) twits and the men are lonesome enough to cavort with them..and cavort and cavort. Not one woman around town who isn't 'pension obsessed?' YOURS---not hers---and most of them want to wear the dress whites too! I disliked (almost) everyone in this dopey movie and mistakenly HOPED Lou Jr.would throw em' all in a pit with a rope ladder and a jug of stale water. Years ago I watched this movie with the only women who would KNOW-who MIGHT make me feel less like a 'traitor'--traitor to a hit movie I was SUPPOSED to weep with!!! I watched An Officer and a Gentleman with 4 Air Force pilots wives--I was the only 'civilian' in the house. (We lived in a subdivision that was located very close to a large Air Force base back then) Instead of weepy sniffles I heard giggles. In the end ---the factory 'rescue', the upchuck inducing theme song--the most outspoken of the pilot's wives said--laughing--"Heck! If Bob* would have run through Shakey's (a defunct chain of pizza parlors) he'd have found me in a clown costume looking like a Ringling Brothers reject! If he carried me past 40 pitchers of beer and a drunken birthday party it would have been the END of his career!!" BEST LINE (to me!) that summarizes this dare I say'CAPTAIN OBVIOUS' movie! Thanks and I apologize..
