I've been looking for this type of TV stand for years now for my HDTV and component setup in the family room. The layout of the room as such is that the TV needs to be placed in the corner. I did not want a wall mounted unit, as I did not want to drill into the wall. I have an added obstruction by the corner of the room with a fireplace brick mantle that extends out a foot in a rectangular shape. This creates an awkward angle at the outer corner of the fireplace mantle to the opposite wall. Thus my current floor stand had to be beyond the fireplace, with a lot of open space behind the stand. The smaller sized floor stands that would fit the space on the floor could not handle the size of my TV. With the smaller footprint of the Altra Galaxy stand, I could place back behind the brick corner with the TV running diagonal to the corner in mid air. My TV is a 42" HDTV LED that is about 4 yrs old, and weighs about 80 lbs. The product description did not say so, but the assembly instructions said this is rated up to 135lbs (along with the stated 50" limitation), but not sure I would want to test that level. I was worried about the stand being sturdy enough, and it held my TV well when assembly and mount attached. The top shelf is made of glass, so not sure about its weight limitations. I am able to put on a blu ray player and small center & front L/R speakers. I stacked 2 of the heavier components on the bottom shelf space. The whole setup seemed sturdy, and does not look like it could tip, which was another concern of mine. But I no longer have small children in the house either, so if one were to push or hang on, it probably could topple. Assembly was straightforward. Instructions are diagrams that were easy to follow. Just need screwdrivers and hammer, but a ratchet set does help with nut tightening sequence when needed (it comes with a simple wrench, but difficult to handle and ratchet went much faster). Also, assembly is easier with 2 people, will definitely need 2 when mounting the TV to the stand. Overall pleased with this stand and the price paid. It allows my TV and components to be setup in a more compact space in the corner of the room.
