All around bad

The systems could never fullfil the claims of 60FPS in tripple A titles, it barely broke 30. The processors to chose from are lacking to say the least, and the performance diminshes after a week of casual use. The UEFI fails to recognize bootable USBs, either HDD or flash drive. Wireless is faulty, . Overall, the system feels like using Vista on first year Windows XP hardware, and that's without adding the bloated AlienFX and specialized drivers. I've tried SSDs, fresh Windows 7,8 and 10 installs, Android x86, Ubuntu 12.04 through 14.04, Xubuntu 16.04, beefing up the RAM, swapping out between brands, swapping processors the standard line of i5's and the 'T' line, on two Alphas (i3 and i7). Nothing makes this system worth the asking price. At this point, running ANY web browser freezes and crashes the system.

I was looking for a prebuilt system for less than 1000 bucks that could run the current generation of pc and steam games reasonably well. The Alienware Alpha hits that mark dead center. This has all the power of any $2500 gaming laptop. It is a great form factor, runs quiet and has no problems with video editing because of the dedicated GPU. We intended for it to be a secondary PC but have decided to get the Steam version for the entertainment center (and learn Linux) and bump the Alpha to my office.

I bought this thinking I would have a beautiful, amazing piece of machinery but ended up with a "computer" that lacks some requirements to even work, not including how I have to constantly fix the power supply.

Alpha Console a Game Changer!

Customer review by JBIRWIN

Purchased the Alpha to play all my computer games and steam games and this little machine has far surpassed all my expectations. The Alpha has the capability to upgrade the memory to 16GB as well as the processor. System is super compact and takes up little to no room on my entertainment center. Graphics on all my games have been set on High or Ultra and run smooth. Alienware you did this right! Bringing computer games to the living room on the big screen is a game changer.

I absolutely love my Alpha console. The quality of the graphics are superior to the current next gen consoles. The games tested that showed the difference were the witcher III (Demo), Mortal Combat X, Ori and the blind forest, south park stick of truth, Darksiders II and state of decay year one edition. When switching over to windows mode the core 3 version played world of Warcraft on ultra high with fully maxed settings at a steady rate of 76-98 FPS. I did notice some lag on the icore 3 here or there but that was mainly only when playing Injustice: Gods among us. The system also uses less power when on and much less in standby mode than all current and previous gen systems. When I tried to price out building a system for what I paid that was equivalent I couldn't do it. Also Dell PRICE MATCHES from other sites and advertisements. Very awesome guys! Valve doesn't have every game you might want like Madden but they do have a solid 75% or so of the AAA titles along with a ton of fantastic Indy games. You can also score some of the exclusives off of PS and xbox as they made a PC version :)

I'm a 40yo gamer. I'm disabled with severe psoriatic arthritis which has disfigured my hands. I have a hard time using a keyboard and mouse. I do however have a device that attaches to my 360 controller which allows me to continue gaming. It is not just a distraction from the constant pain but allows me to keep my joints moving which slows the degeneration. The Alienware Alpha and it's UI is the PC gaming solution I've been dreaming of. I was only able to afford the base unit but I've been blown away by the performance. It plays everything I pull up on it! I do want to upgrade it to a hybrid or SSD and 16gb of RAM to speed it up even more as other reviewers have mentioned. I don't feel that it even needs it but faster is always better. Thank you Alienware for allowing me to continue to game and giving me millions of more people to socialize with. It's appreciated!

I have two of these for separate geographic locations. First off, I love this machine despite it's inherent flaws. Although there is only 2GB of video ram the customized GTX 980 is a powerhouse with most modern games. In both of my Alienware Alphas I have the core i7 upgrade, it's a cheap enough upgrade considering cost and longevity. I've upgraded both to be 16GB of aftermarket ram although 8GB is plenty for most people I didn't feel it was enough for what I'm running. I've upgraded both hard drives to SSHD 1TB drives, major performance increase as well as faster boot times. I currently have not found any game that run poorly and I'm playing modern titles like Star Wars Battlefront and Mortal Kombat X on max settings. All games that I play, whether it be in Steam, Origin, or UPlay on Windows 10 Pro are running excellently. What appealed to me the most on this model was the GPU. I've had a few Alienware machines over the years and they've suited me quite well with very few issues. Keeping in mind that the GPU is not upgradeable in this unit is a bit of a downfall but all things considered it should provide a couple of years of decent gaming before it slips to casual gaming for older titles. I would also like to point out that I build computers as a hobby/small business so I can tell you from first-hand knowledge you cannot build a computer with these specs for the prices that Dell is offering them for.

I ended up returning the Alienware Alpha system. It ran great, was way faster than I expected, had excellent GPU performance, and was nearly silent. The form-factor is excellent. All in all, it's a design marvel. What it isn't is a good console replacement. The steam library of controller activated games is limited and even the ones that do support it assume you have a keyboard and mouse as well for menu navigation etc. The steam client in big picture mode is okay, you can get around in it just fine. I would highly recommend the Alpha for someone wanting an entry level gaming PC with a small footprint. I wish I had a use for it, I loved it. If you're looking for something to play games in the living room with, consider a dedicated gaming console instead. Also, upgrading the SLOW-SLOW-SLOW 5400 RPM HDD with a SSD made a huge difference in performance.
