- Hello. I work in the garden center at a wal-mart on nolensville Pk in Nashville, TN. I have had an enormous amount of calls regarding the toxicity of play sand this time of year and all of them have had concerns regarding the silica content of playbox sand and the way it may affect their children. Most people commonly believe that silica is something awful like silica gel or more specifically accurate Tremolite Asbestos, which is found in sand as a carcinogenic and toxic substance which may cause harm when inhaled. Sandtastik has a FAQ on their website, and they are based in Durham, NC, a place that is known for qualities important as these. The correct question is Free silica or Quartz. The answer is their sand is safe and non-toxic. And you may review it here. And you can rest assured you're children are safe with this sand and any sand that has no free silica or quartz. http://www.sandtastik.com/faqby Ricky37176/22/2015Was this answer helpful? - The general advice from many online forums is to find a sand that is recommended for aqauriums. Most people avoid coal slag because of the "stuff to leech from" Sandtastik products are available online and are specifically for aquariums. However, most aquariums using play sand require it to be rinsed a lot. Rinse. Dry. Rinse. Dry. And it has been done, but most people don't recommend it otherwise. the sandtastik aquariums glass etc can be found on walmart.com by searching the brand name.by Ricky37176/22/2015Was this answer helpful?
