  • A. Thanks for the question. Netbooks are made to be lightweight and portable with a small footprint. Notebooks are built for portability but can sometimes be larger and heavier. Many notebooks are built with performance in mind rather than convenience. A notebook is meant to be something you would be able to do many tasks on, work from, much as you would a desktop. Many notebooks have larger screens and can be used to watch DVDs or Blu-Ray movies. Netbooks generally do not have a screen size over 11 inches, are small and do not have optical drives. Netbooks are meant primarily as a way to provide ultra portability allowing you to stay connected wherever you go. Netbooks are light and small to fit in a backpack, or carry from class to class. They boast plenty of processing power to run programs to take notes or look up resource materials in class. Netbooks are generally less expensive than notebooks making it an ideal tool for students.

  • A. You can do a lot more on a laptop. Laptops have more memory and processing speed. Netbooks are more like a companion to laptops. The biggest advantage being that they are portable.

  • A. Netbook is smaller in physical size and therefore more portable. It is not as powerful and cannot do all of the things that a full laptop can but it is perfect for emails, internet surfing, word documents, etc.

  • A. A laptop is way bigger. This netbook fits so cute in my big purses. Since it is smaller, you would have to buy a cd thing separately.

  • A. A laptop is much bigger and heavier (11-15" screen, 6-7 lbs.) than a netbook (10" screen, 3-4 lbs.). Laptops also have: more powerful processors more memory optical drive (CD/DVD) Of course they are much more expensive ($600+) than a netbook ($300).

  • A. Size, mostly. Most netbook screens are 10.1" diagonally, and will not be bigger than 11.6" They have slower, low-power consumption processors, less RAM, (with limited ability to upgrade; usually 2 GB is the max), and no optical (CD/DVD) drives, and are designed for web surfing, light gaming, and light Office tasks. With a boost in RAM, you could handle light photo editing. Most netbooks ship with the Starter edition of Windows. With laptops, you can pick your screen size (up to 18.5" if you don't mind the weight), select models that have optical drives and more RAM, and can be powerful enough to replace a desktop computer. Your choice depends on your budget, and your needs. Netbooks are more likely to have longer-life batteries, so you can walk around campus all day without needing to bring a charger. Keyboards and screens are smaller though. Best to visit a store and try typing on one, and view the screen size. The 10.1" screens that are most typical are not for everyone.

  • A. The main differences, though I am far from an expert, are: 1) the size and 2) there is no place to load anything (i.e. a disc, CD, DVD, etc.). There are USB ports, though, if that is all you are looking for. It is nice and tiny so very portable and light.

  • A. Thank you for your question. There are several ways you could upload a picture onto this netbook. If you are transferring photos from a digital camera, you may elect to use the Multi-in-1 card reader that is built into the computer. This feature will read small memory chips generally referred to as a media card. The card reader on the machine supports the following types of digital media cards: Secure Digital™ (SD) Card, MultiMediaCard (MMC), Reduced-Size Multimedia Card (RS-MMC), Memory Stick™ (MS), Memory Stick PRO™ (MS PRO), xD-Picture Card™ (xD) . Additionally, many cameras can also connect with a USB attachment cable. This machine has 3 USB 2.0 ports you could use to accomplish connecting that way.

  • A. I think the answer to this question is on the Microsoft web site. For Windows 7 starter edition, there is no way to change the background. You can upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, but you gotta pay for the upgrade. You can change the background in Win7 Home Premium. You can install Netbook Ubuntu Linux. It is free and you change the background.

  • A. I learned this weekend that you can't change the background because it runs on Windows 7 Started Edition and that Edition does not permit changing the background. You can have a screensaver though. You would need to upgrade to another Edition of Windows for this function.

  • A. Thanks for the question. Unfortunately, in its current configuration, you can not change the desktop background. This system comes with Genuine Windows® 7 Starter which has several restrictions, one of which is changing the desktop background. To add this functionality and others to the system you will need to upgrade to a version of Windows that allows you to change the background. Details on upgrading Microsoft Windows can be found on the Microsoft website.

I had an earlier model Aspire (Acer D150) that I'd upgraded to 2 GB RAM. I liked the battery life and how peppy it was, but I didn't like the keyboard. I sold it. 6 months later, I was missing having a small, portable computer. When I saw the color and price drop on this, I decided to order. It came in a few days earlier than forecast, ironically, the same day a local competitor put the same model (different color) on sale in the store. My local Walmart price-matched for me. Hurray! I love this new model. Keys are bigger, screen is brighter, and the processor is faster than my old one. I haven't yet added more RAM and won't - it's plenty fast as is. I did upgrade to Window 7 Professional, however. I'm consistently getting 8-10 hours of battery life web surfing and using it to copy and view photos. I'm so glad I followed my impulse because I'm loving this new Acer.

This is my third netbook I have purchased by Acer. My first was the 8.9 in blue and at the time I purchase this there was no red and I adored it so much because of the compact size. Later, they released the 10.1 a couple of months down the road in red, so I had to have it because it was red, well also because of the screen size. Now a year later, they released the 10.1 Amethyst Purple and I definitely had to have it because purple is my favorite color. But moving on, what really made me purchased this Amethyst was the N450 processor. It is quite faster than the N270 processor in the 8.9 and the 10.1 red I mentioned earlier. Also, It does not generate as much heat as the earlier models I've previously have owned. I also installed the 2gb memory chip and upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium. By installing the 2gb memory, Windows 7 Home Premium is running quite smoothly and I am opening up more windows at a decent speed. The keyboard is nice as well. Some are confused as to what you can do on a netbook. Believe me, you can do the same thing you do on a notebook. Netbooks are compact and convenient to carry around and I just love it!

I've only had my netbook for a couple weeks, but I use it daily to check email, Facebook, pay bills and surf the internet. It works great for these purposes. Windows 7 starter is pretty basic - I'm used to Windox XP on a business laptop, but it's fine for what I am doing with this netbook. Some users have complained about not being about to change the desktop wallpaper, but I found a free application online - Oceanis - that you can download to allow you to change your wallpaper. It's pretty slick. My only complaint is that the response time can be a bit lacking. Again, I am comparing this to a business based laptop that is just lightning fast. I'm adjusting, and for my purposes this is a great little machine. It's totally portable - fits right in my purse. I would recommend this to anyone interested in a small, portable laptop.

Happy I broke my Acer ZG5

I bought this netbook to replace an earlier 8.9" Aspire One that I broke while trying to upgrade it's memory and SSD (I guess the combination of tightly packed tiny components and eyeballs dating back to the Eisenhower administration have found my limit of hardware hacking). Strange as it sounds, I'm glad I did. This unit is so much better than the previous one. With 2GB of memory (upgrade -- but don't get the upgrade recommended by the website, it's the wrong memory) and a real HD (the SSDs in netbooks are notoriously slow, which is why I was trying to replace it), this thing is great. Sure, the screen is still a bit small for some things, but after loading Linux on it (try the Ubuntu Netbook Edition), this little thing really screams. And with the purple (er, "amethyst") color being discontinued by Acer, this is a great deal on a distinctive netbook.
