- You can use it while they are still small! Start now while they cant destroy it. After they get big if they really want to get out, trust me they will. This is my cage after my 10 month old 67 lb lab got in it for the first time on the same day I bought it. The fluffy stuff is the remains of a pillow he got a hold of. If they are crate trained by the time they get big enough to tear out of it, then you should be fine.
