The unstoppable force that is High School Musical 2 continues its reign with the release of Non-Stop Dance Party. Following a formula that worked extremely well for its other best-selling franchise, Hannah Montana, Disney has taken the soundtrack to its hit movie and has remixed those songs into one non-stop parade of music.
The remixes have transformed the already high-energy songs into even more danceable tunes, and just when you thought these songs couldn't be any catchier, they are. The disc is also loaded with bonus features that are an absolute must-have for fans: Photos, printable party invitations, and a video of "Around the World" help make this a well-rounded disc that will keep fans busy long beyond the 45 minutes of playing time.
Even without the motherlode of extras, this disc simply can't help but be a hit with the tween set. Even in its quietest moments, the disc is energetic and exciting, with sounds that range from '80s techno to touches of reggae and contemporary hip-hop. Although these are songs that tweens now know by heart, the sound is completely different.
Kicking off with the infectious "What Time Is It," which has been given a fabulous instrumental infusion at the beginning, the disc immediately establishes itself as one that is familiar but, at the same time, is entirely fresh. It's a great reworking of the material and the disc plays as one long mix without stopping for breath in between songs. The segues are smooth and no club DJ could do any better.
That new approach shines through on every track. The songs are still recognizable to fans, but each one has been given an extreme electronic makeover. Of course, "I Don't Dance" was already a high-octane cut that was just waiting for its dance mix, so it's not surprising that it stands out as one of the most energetic, catchy cuts on the collection.
The always-touching "Gotta Go My Own Way" has the feel of a '70s disco breakup ballad -- but not in a cringe-worthy way. In its new form, it actually works as well as the original, but could definitely find some legs on the dance floor.
HSM2 is so packed with favorites that listeners will be hard-pressed to find anything here that doesn't work. Non-Stop Dance Party merely gives them a second life. And for some of those songs, life is better the second time around. No song gives a better example of this than "You Are The Music In Me (Sharpay Version)." It has a great '80s feel and a thumping bass beat that is more playful than sugary; at times it feels like a female-driven version of a Devo song.
The final cut is definitely the kind of big finale worthy of a Disney project. "The Megamix" pulls together a half-dozen of the songs into one big, bold groove-heavy dance number. It's a nice twist on the overall album, and it serves as irrefutable proof that there's more than one way to spin a dance track.
