Too much violence

I thought this was a fantasy movie. It was very dark and just a violent movie, but in Spanish, with an ending that broke my heart. There was nothing really special about this movie to justify watching such a deeply disturbing film.

This movie edition turned out to be in Spanish, with english sub titles. That is not what I expected, or wanted.

One of Del Toro's finest films

1) To appreciate Del Toro, you have to understand his "beginning" as a special effects designer for "horror" films. He## Boy, He## Boy II... are the ones most people associate with him. So his bizarre character (latex monsters) are how he began. 2) "Devil's Backbone" is a kind of previous "version" of this story and well worth owning, too. Pan's is much more developed. 3) Del Toro's movie plots are not easy to pick up by a casual viewing. What people miss is Del Toro's eye for the camera, the color palates he uses, the incredible detail into every story board. Every scene is laden with imagery that contributes to the "feel", "mood", and I think ads weight to the film. Even the musical score - a child like lullaby yet just a bit haunting, creates an incredible mood. 4) Pan's Labyrinth is a "labyrinth" on multiple levels. To understand the film, you must view it once, then watch the director's cut and listen to what Del Toro is trying to accomplish. (For e.g. there are "myth" scenes that are parallel with "real" scenes.) 5) in the 2 DVD set, the 2nd DVD has an interview with Charlie Rose and 2 other Spanish directors and this helps the uninitiated see what Del Toro does. 6) The extras on the DVD also show you the incredible mind and talent of Del Toro. His artist book sketches and ideas alone are fascinating 7) While Pan's is a dark movie, I suspect 90% of the people who watch it miss the levels, the "labyrinth" between what is real, mythical, and if / when the 2 realms ever overlap. 8) Look at the characters he creates. What does the mother represent? The villain? The girl? The fawn? Which characters is always true to his / her word? Which one's are flawed? These and many others are part of the labyrinth. 9) if you do not watch the director's cut, you'll not understand much of what he was doing. I didn't. I've probably watched the DVD 10 times and each time am blown away with what he accomplished.
