Review by Library Journal (2001-06-15)

Child's Jack Reacher series just keeps on getting better. This fifth adventure (after Running Blind) finds the ex-military cop in the parched desert of west Texas. While hitchhiking, he is picked up by a beautiful woman named Carmen Greer, an act that plunges him into a maelstrom of deceit, cruelty, and murder. Sloop, Carmen's abusive husband, is due to be released from prison, and she tries to persuade Reacher to kill him.

He refuses but is concerned enough about her well-being to hire out as a ranch hand at the Greers' remote ranch, where he finds a strange, bigoted family hostile to Carmen and her young daughter. Within days of his return, Sloop is shot dead and Carmen arrested. To defend her, Reacher hires a newly minted lawyer, who, is female, gay, and vegetarian. Together they unravel the mystery, leading to an explosive, nail-biting climax during a chase through a thunderstorm. Highly recommended.

Customer Product Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5★ by 3reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Echo Burning is up to Lee Child's usual par. Reacher is on the road again....in far West Texas this time. The ride he gets with his thumb this time takes him even farther west, pretty much into the no man's land where it's too hot to live and neighbors are too sparse to hear the screams or see the smoke!Lee Child knows how to keep one on the edge of their seat, hanging on for dear life and turning pages one after another but not daring to miss a word. There are too many twists and turns that can be missed if a sentence goes unread. One dose of Lee Child and Jack Reacher is not nearly enough. I'm on my ninth straight right now, waiting for #17 with bated breath. 08/13/2012
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Looking forward to reading. Love the author and the Reacher novels. 12/27/2012
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Low Cost Shipping This book I got at a great value and with only 95 cents shipping and handling. You can't beat that and on top of it.....it comes to your door. The delivery was prompt as well and I had plenty of time to read the book for my book club. I would use this service again. 08/21/2010
