700c Men's Schwinn Carbon Fiber-1000 Road Bike 4.4 5 71 76
Great Starter Bike So i have been doing a lot of research trying to find decent road bikes that have been within my price range for several months. I basically narrowed it down between this bike and a Motobecane Mirage Pro. After weighting the pros and cons of each bike I decided to get the Schwinn. Honestly I was skeptical. I have heard that the quality of Schwinn bikes have gone down dramatically and they weren't the same reliable company that they used to be before they were bought out. When I received the bike I found it very nicely packaged and shipped. It came in only 4 days as well, the 13.95 shipping is a very good bargain. Upon opening and assembling the bike, I tediously searched over the bike for cracks in the carbon fiber or damaged components. I found none except a small scratch that appeared to be from previous installation of the rear wheel. Other than that the bike was perfect. Shimano 2200 derailleurs aren't the best out there and adjusting them takes time. I found the rear derailleur to be perfectly adjusted but the front needed a lot of work. My honest recommendation is to take the bike in to your local bike shop and have a full tune up done to the bike. Its only $45 at my shop and totally worth it. Upon opening up the front and rear hubs I found less than necessary amounts of grease so they definitely need to be repacked. The bottom bracket, however, was fine. The cranks on the bike are nice, however they are an odd brand I have never heard of and a bit on the heavy side. The bike weights around 20lbs which is acceptable for a bike this size with the materials it is made out of but then again it should way a pound or two less. Then again it is a $500 dollar bike. So on to the part about riding it. It is a blast to ride and the STI shifters work wonderfully. I am really surprised about how the bike feels on the road. I have friends who have $1500 plus road bikes and this bike feels just as good. Overall I would recommend this bike to anyone who wants to look into riding bikes for a hobby or competitively. It is an overall nice bike with decent components and the good news is is you can find used shimano 105 derailleurs on ebay for around $20 bucks a pop and upgrade to nice derailleurs for hardly any cost. Hope this helps! 09/15/2009
AMAZING BIKE!!! Get it now. If you're reading this review, then you're probably like me, wondering if this could be for real. My friend, it's for real. I just received my bike on July 26, 2010 and was I in for a shock.Like other reviewers posted, the bike was packaged very well. There was not a scratch any where. Everything was wrapped with foam or cardboard and then zip tied together, so that nothing moved around in the box.First of all, I am 41 years old, 5'9" and 245 lbs. I used to ride competitively 25 years ago and wanted to get back into riding. I'm very familiar with how a road bike should be set up and that's why this bike caught my eye. My main concern with purchasing this bike were the rims. I wasn't sure if they would be able to handle my weight. After taking the first ride, I feel very confident in them now. These rims are very solid. The site listed that the tires were going to be 700 x 26c, but mine came with 700 x 23c, which I definitely liked. I wasn't looking forward to the larger tire. The forks, top tube and bottom tube are all aerodynamically shaped for better wind resistance. You can't tell it from the online picture of the bike, but the seat and chain stays are curved inward a little and then flare out to the wheel hub. (See picture provided). This is awesome because it gives you more clearance than older bikes when pedaling. It's listed as 14 speed on the site, but mine, like some other reviewers, came in as a 16 speed. BONUS!!! The front and rear derailleurs are Shimano 2200s, as listed, with the Shimano Sora Shifters. The small front chain ring was a 39 and not a 42 as listed. This isn't a huge problem because I'm not looking to pushing any big gears right now. The only disappointment for me, was that the crank wasn't a Shimano. It seems a little heavy and not as well made as the rest of the bike or components. For right now, it will definitely do the job.Once I got the bike together, I took it for a 10 mile ride. I noticed that the derailleurs were not quite perfect in their shifting, so when I got back to the house, I opened up the package that had the users manual and there were the instructions on how to adjust the front and rear derailleurs. Followed them to the letter and now it shifts like a dream. If you're not to familiar with how these work, then take it to WalMart or your local bike shop and get them adjusted. This is by far, the best purchase that I have ever made from WalMart.I have pictures from when I received the bike, the process of putting it together and me riding it. Nice bike, too small for me I am 6'0 with a 34" inseam, and this bike is too small for me. Unfortunately the ad online doesn't really give very good specs, so I measured it out. It is a 20.25" (52cm) frame from center of crank to top of top tube; or 19.5" (49.5cm) to middle of top tube. I found myself requiring the seat adjusted too high, which meant I had to bend over really far to get to the handle bars. This made it a bit hard on my back and neck. Otherwise the bike rides pretty darn well for $500. After some research I found I need about a 58cm frame. I am going to return it, and hopefully someone shorter will really enjoy this bike! 05/17/2009
Amazing bike !! I love bikes, riding and anything bike! The Cf 1000 is now the tenth bike I own joining brands such as GT, Haro, Giant and even a vintage Peugeot! I debated for several weeks and it came down to the CF 1000 and a Jamis Ventura. The CF 1000 just feels so much more spirited, almost alive. The weight is 21.4 lbs, I've seen a lot of different numbers regarding weight but that's what I got and I'm very happy with that number, it feels a lot lighter. Handling is awesome, not jittery at all like other road bikes I've tried, it's very smooth on the road, very composed and predictable. Quality: I still can't believe that Schwinn produced this bike for $499. This bike and the manufacturing is way ahead of the game. This bike puts $1000 bikes to shame! I wanted tall gearing for speed on downhills so I switched out the cranks from the 50 tooth ring to 53 and the 11 tooth rear it came with is perfect. Coasting downhill I reached 43mph with only 90 psi in the tires ( can go up to 125psi) and this bike has cut 25% off my time on my favorite 12 mile speed run. Here's the bottom line: If you're not riding in next years Tour de France, put your ego on the shelf and buy this bike, your biggest performance gains will be from conditioning, not from a sub 20 lb several thousand dollar bike. Common sense. 09/30/2010
