I'm a veteran HP user, having used HP calculators since 1980. These are the 'Rolls-Royce' of calculators, and the new HP-35s is no exception. HP lost it's way with calculators in recent times, but this is a welcome return to a great tradition. I'm considering buying a couple more, to keep if HP stops making RPN calculators. This one is a GEM.

The 35s has the nice feel, key colors and layout of the first HP calculators of the '70s. Programming capabities are basic - pre-HP41 - with limited variable naming and few alpha characters. It comes with a really nice hard case and don't forget to contact HP for the free, hard-copy user's manual. At $40-50, it's about 15% of what I paid for an original HP 35 in my freshman year of college. People lined up outside my dorm room to give it a try. Let's hope HP continues the comeback. A 42s body with SD/USB capabilies, BASIC programming interfaced with a PC platform and color display would be awesome.

Purchased this calculator to replace the HP33 which I was using for the past 3 years. I really like the HP33 but I found over time that it had key jamming issues. The HP35S is a well designed, well layed out, hand calculator for all engineering functions.

excuse me for my ignorance but am purchasing for my son. this item will calculate fractions, right?
by rickets 10/7/2008
  • Yes, it handles fractions but is far more powerful. It you only need to handle fractions, I suggest buying a much cheaper calculator.

  • Yes by putting decimals between the whole number and the numerator and denominator.

  • Yes, to enter a number, you use the decimal key where you normally would, then again after the numerator, so it displays the line (don't remember the term), then you enter the denominator. Pretty cool, and maybe the way other calculators work. The answer is then displayed as a decimal until you press a key FDISP for fraction display. Then the display stays in fractions until you change it back. The nice thing about the 35S is that it can use RPN (reverse Polish notation) or algebraic enty. RPN for me!

  • Yes, of course. Like for 1/4, you could punch: 1, enter, 4, divide

  • yes. you can choose how you want to display fractions. in HP world, a fraction of 2-3/4 is entered as 2.3.4, the calculator knows how to interpret it. i know the time has passed, but if your kid can run this, he'll have a leg up on his friends with a Ti.

does it solve problems for exaample: 6x-5y+10 and solve for x or y? does it solve equations and variables and easy to use
by kadams9 2/14/2010
  • Yes, it can solve this kind of equation. "Easy to use"? It depends on your skill level.

  • yes, it can solve simultaneous equations (you need two equations with two variables). easy to use is a relative statement. with the decline in overall intelligence and education in this country, you'll be challenged at first. but as you use it, you'll be come smarter as it forces you to think... which is a good thing.

  • With one equation and two unknowns, there is no single solution to x and y. The calculator only returns multiple solutions as a message, but no actual solution. It needs two equations with two unknowns to get a solution for x and y.
