So Great, We Bought Another!

Customer review by mshne76

5.0 stars by mshne76

We purchased a white Hamilton Beach Single Serve Blender over two and a half years ago. We bought it to mix simple protein shakes, but it ended up working so well, we use it all the time for everything, even ice. We have a big blender, but the little thing is so quick and easy to clean, if we're only mixing up two drinks, we usually just use it twice instead of getting out the big-boy. Even though it only has a pulse button, it's power and size allow it to work wonderfully. We bought another because we lost part of our lid and I figured, at this price, it would be nice to have an extra cup. I was very happy that it now comes in black. I did a side-by-side comparison and the older one has gotten a bit louder with time, but still has the same power as the new one. The loudness is more in the blade itself, which is integrated into the bottom of the cup. I took the cups off and ran just the motors, they were almost the same, with the newer one being just a bit more quiet. The cup has held up well, resistant to stains and most scuffs even though I stick it in the dishwasher a lot (although we use it so much, it's easier to just rinse it by hand). With the economy seemingly forcing companies to make cut-backs, I worried it wouldn't be the same quality, but they only seem to have made two changes. They shortened the cord from 3 to 2 feet long, and it now comes with one travel lid. Pictured on the website are both a travel lid AND a black lid with a clear plastic part in the middle sticking up, which was two parts, the smaller being very easy to lose. Manufacturing just the travel lid is an upgrade. You can close the opening you use for drinking easily and it works great for mixing. If those few changes are what it took to keep the 175 watt motor working this well, I'm beyond happy for the price paid. Also, considering that we try to buy the best and do research before purchasing any household appliance, this little blender comes highly recommended; it stands along side a Kitchenaid stand mixer and a Cuisinart food processor. I know this was a long review for such a small and cheap appliance, but it's that good!

$18.93? It was only $15.88!!!

After reading what seems like a million reviews on tons of Blender's I ended up purchasing this personal blender for $15.88 at my local walmart! I wanted a blender to make smoothies/fraps and it does a perfect job. It chopped the ice right away, no stops to stir or pick up the container and give it a shake! It's not loud either which is nice. It looks nice on the counter and doesn't take up much room! I love that i can drink out of the cup it's blended it since i hate doing dishes.

More than just a smoothie blender!

Customer review by commercesd

I'd loaned out my blender over a year ago and never missed it, because I got addicted to using a wand-type hand blender for just about everything. It had an attachment so that it could be used as a food processor. It finally gave out after a few year's use and the new one I'd bought didn't have that handy attachment. Still, I really didn't miss the blender. Or so I thought. I could make smoothies with the wand blender, but it didn't crush ice. In fact, no blender I ever had did, despite even advertising that it could. I had considered getting the magic bullet but really couldn't see that I needed something that comprehensive, given that I'm not cooking for a family or having a lot of get togethers. I also didn't care to spend around $60. I decided to see if I could find a blender that really crushed ice for the smoothies I love so much. And there it was! Under $20! I didn't care that it was "personal" size; in fact, that works for me well because I have almost no counter space in my small studio. The ad said it made "icy drinks" and it just seemed logical that it would crush a few ice cubes. The reviews were mixed; one person complained that he or she had to pulse it several times to crush the ice; another person said it worked exactly as she thought it should. So I went ahead and ordered it, figuring if it was really bad, I'd just return it. I did notice that one reviewer says you can't use regular sized ice cubes, but I did not find that to be true. I simply put in 3 at a time and pulsed the unit rather than holding it down. That worked very well. I'll update the review if that changes, but it makes no sense for the ad to say "icy drinks" and then expect the customers to practically crush the ice themselves. Come to think of it, when I'm at Jamba Juice I notice the employees pulsing those machines as well. And they are using industrial strength blenders that cost a fortune. As far as that goes, this little machine is a bargain since it does crush ice! As I write this, I am enjoying a low-calorie smoothie made with Trader Joe's Banilla yogurt (banana and vanilla flavored), a scoop of whey protein powder, Walgreen's fiber powder, a splash of juice and 6 ice cubes. It is a dream come true! This little puppy was just delivered by UPS less than a half hour ago. I started with all ingredients, but only 3 ice cubes. I could see by pulsing it that it was quickly crushing the ice. I added the other ice cubes and pulsed for around a minute or so more, and voila! A great smoothie, just like I wanted it, ready to drink. It's handy to have it in the cup it comes in, even if you opt to drink it right there rather than put a lid on it and go somewhere. I am very impressed with this little machine and will probably use it daily, especially in the summer. I love those blended drinks at all the coffee shops, and now I can just make 'em myself! Hurrah! I also noticed that you can grind coffee beans and it looks to me like I can use it as a mini food processor. It says not to put cheese, crackers or hard foods in it, yet it does crush ice. I'm very happy with this item and we're gonna have a fabulous relationship! It is so compact that it takes about as much room as a glass does on the counter and it would be very easy to pack this to take on a trip.

I've had this unit for a couple weeks and use it daily in the morning for blending fruit. Often when I first turn it on a funny smell comes out of it that kind of smells like plastic burning. Is this normal for when you first start using it? I've noticed the same smell from a previous blender I had (not the same model as this) so I wasn't surprised at first, but I'm still wondering if it should be happening.
by smd99 1/17/2012
  • I realized what the smell was from. It only happened when I shook the blender to get all the fruit to get into the blade (when there wasn't enough liquid for the blender to suck down the fruit). If I had enough liquid to begin with and the blender could just suck everything down, then there was no smell.

  • I have had this product for a week and use it 2 times a day to make smoothies. I have never noticed a smell coming from it. This does not seem normal to me.

  • I think I've figured out the reason for the smell. When I first started using the blender, I would put cut up fruit in there and would need to shake it a bit at first for the blade to turn the fruit into liquid (otherwise the blade would just spin and not pull the fruit down). If I put some juice in there first, the fruit got pulled into the blade by itself (or rather by the juice) and there is no burning smell. So basically the smell was from the shaking, which probably had something to do with the binding between the clutch mechanism and the blade mechanism as mentioned in the answer by the manufacturer.

  • Mine doesn't do this. But I have had blenders that do have a smell. I got over it.

  • I've not had this issue. Perhaps washing the inside of the container prior to use might be helpful. Or perhaps you are blending too long, or have too much food in the blender cup which may be taxing the motor.

  • All of the blenders I used in the past along with this one have a slight burning smell due to the motor being used. From my experience, it's normal. I have blenders that have lasted 10+ years even with the motor-burning smell, so I'm not to cautious about it. Usually when I smell it, I know I need to cool the motor down by letting it rest.

  • Thank you for your question. The burning smell is usually caused from a binding between the cutting unit clutch and the clutch on the top housing which connects to the motor. The unit should be allowed to cool down then you should check the cutting unit to see if the blades on the cutting unit “spin freely”.

  • You are definitely burning up the motor with trying to crunch up ice most probably. Most blenders have a hard time with ice. You would be better off chopping the ice up to smaller pieces then put it in the blender. I think this one is more for shakes that are easier to mix up. Take it back and get another one.

  • Just purchased a new one and they only come with the travel lid, which closes and seals up for usage when mixing. I also have an older one that came with the mixing lid with the little plastic part in middle of it, it was hard to use since you had to put two lids in.

  • The unit I purchased has one travel lid. The sipping lid has a slide tab closure that prevents splashing during the blender process.
