About the author

Biography of Keillor, Garrison

Humorist Garrison Keillor was born Gary Edward Keillor in Anoka, Minnesota on August 7, 1942. He began using the pen name Garrison at the age of thirteen. He received a B.A. from the University of Minnesota in 1966 and paid for his tuition by working at the campus radio station. In 1974, he wrote an essay for the New Yorker about the Grand Ole Opry, which led to his live radio program, A Prairie Home Companion.

Stories from Prairie Home were collected and published, but his debut as a novelist was in 1985 with Lake Wobegon Days. His other novels include WLT: A Radio Romance, The Book of Guys, Wobegon Boy, Me by Jimmy (Big Boy). Valente, and Good Poems, American Places. He has also written the children's books Cat, You Better Come Home, The Old Man Who Loved Cheese, and The Sandy Bottom Orchestra. He won a Grammy Award for his recording of Lake Wobegon Days and has been inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame.

Reviews

Review by Library Journal (1997-08)

"Okay, so a chicken goes into the library...". It's going to be worth buying this collection if only to hear the setup for this groaner let alone the punch line. Keillor and ensemble have such a wonderful way with gentle satire and screwball comedy, e.g., the Ethics Workshop, which features the story of a sleazy talk show host"The Limbaugh of Liberals"who misses out on the big bucks because of his nagging conscience.

Visit with the famous as they celebrate New Year's notably Julia Child, spending the holidays in North Dakota. Mister Rogers is featured in a commercial for his cat box video from Bertha's Kitty Boutique. The third cassette is full of the funniest (and possibly the oldest) corny jokes ever. The recording is well produced. The sketches are supported by music and sound effects and a laugh track that enhances the voices. All public libraries will want to consider adding this production. Barbara Valle, El Paso P.L, Tex.
