About this item

Type O Negative: the band that most people don't know what to make of. Are they goth or metal? Or goth-metal? Are they gloom and doom or is that a tongue sticking in a cheek in there somewhere. Well, the talented and way-out-in-left-field quartet from New York City is all of the above and more besides. Sludgy, gloomy, despairing... but always totally engaging. In fact, the cover shot of Rasputin with his piercing eyes kind of serves as a warning of what you get once you crack open the jewel case.

It has to be said, the Negs are definitely Black Sabbath students who've studied their lessons well. There are times the deep, dark, fuzz guitars seem like they're wading in quicksand and you can't help but think of Tony Iommi. But the Sabbath references are in pockets here and there, rather than dominating entire songs. Then T.O.N. throws a curve ball and reminds you this is a band of a different era.

Like on "Tripping A Blind Man" (a title which in itself says a lot about the band), which starts with a quintessential Sabbath lurch, goes through lighter patches, dabbles in harmonies, then finishes with a spurt of speed. It's one of several lengthy tracks on the disc. (These guys love going for seven to 10 minutes at a time.) Or the epic "Profits of Doom" which veers off into psychedelic-era Beatles and becomes quite trippy at different points. Or the title track, which flips from a twisted kind of pop-metal to the-Tubes-on-steroids in the blink of an eye.

Yeah, it's all kind of strange and amazing. But the desperation is never far from view. Like in the wending "Hail and Farewell To Britain" in which singer Peter Steele keeps telling us "I Can't Believe How Cruel Life Is." He sells the point pretty well but at the same time this album did race up the charts in both the U.S. and Europe, so life can't be all bad for Peter and his bandmates.

Type O Negative is probably one of the finest goth-metal bands America has produced. And don't worry, they won't leave you wanting to slash your wrists. But Dead Again certainly isn't party music either. And yet it's harder to put down than old Rasputin himself.

This album is good, but it all sounds like stuff they have already done. I had huge expectations for this one and I was a little disappoited to be honest. September Sun and All Hail and Farewell To Britian are the best songs on the album in my opinion. Might want to get some of their older stuff before you listen to this one, Slow,Deep, and Hard would be a good one to start with or their most popular album "Bloody Kisses" Give the band a try the boys out of Broklyn will appreciate your loyalty cause you will get hooked on their music I promise you. You like hard rock with deep meanings listen to them.. They are the best..
