Traces the author's decision to quit her job and travel the world for a year after suffering a midlife crisis and divorce, a journey that took her to three places in her quest to explore her own nature and learn the art of spiritual balance.

This beautifully written, heartfelt memoir touched a nerve among both readers and reviewers. Elizabeth Gilbert tells how she made the difficult choice to leave behind all the trappings of modern American success (marriage, house in the country, career) and find, instead, what she truly wanted from life. Setting out for a year to study three different aspects of her nature amid three different cultures, Gilbert explored the art of pleasure in Italy and the art of devotion in India, and then a balance between the two on the Indonesian island of Bali. By turns rapturous and rueful, this wise and funny author (whom "Booklist" calls "Anne Lamott's hip, yoga- practicing, footloose younger sister") is poised to garner yet more adoring fans.

This is a very interesting book of the author's life to find her higher consciousness. She took herself to the extreme of visiting other countries to find herself. Its a good read..but (one don't have to travel all the way to find themselves)...Everyone of us do it in different ways. And her story was interesting , we get to know how other people in various countries live.

This is one of my all-time favorites that will be on my bookshelf forever. I highly recommend to anyone who loves food, travel and personal growth. Now I only wish I could find more books like this. I just finished "SEAsoned: A Chef’s Journey With Her Captain" by Victoria Allman that was pretty good too. I would love to hear other suggestions for similar books. Thanks!

My daughter and I saw this woman on Oprah little over a month ago. Thought it would be interesting to read. Also with some of the audience commnets of reading this book and seeing things differently made is want to more read it. We each got our own copy to read at our own pace. Another mention I went to a book store in the town where I work they had to order it for me, but the cost was going to be $15.00 per book! So glad we went through Wal-Mart, has always Save More Live Better, how true.

A Little Shallow

I liked this book. I can't say it was a complete page turner, but it left me with good advice. Especially about the "Going to Italy and eating everything, at anytime." If only we could all be so lucky. Although I thought the author seemed a little bit shallow in her trials (I've seen and heard much worse) or that she candy coated them, I do believe she had a vibrant spirit, and had a refreshing "no holds barred" take on her experiences. I love that she reaches out to these older, wise sages, I could feel their power through the book.
