I have had this in a box in my basement forever. Well, now that my basement flooded for the first time in 38 years, I have had to take them out of the soggy box and put them together. They are great. We have used them to put stuff on after we cleaned up after the flood. I like the fact that I can roll them around everywhere and the wheels lock in place. Great buy!!!

    • I also bought the plastic carpet runner for mine and they work great. Also, if you go to the Seville site- they sell the covers very inexpensively.

    • Walmart does sell the Alera plastic liners for the shelves. However, it is a Fair Trade item and therefore is very pricey. Way above what I thought they would cost. They are pre-measured to fit any of the various chrome shelf units. The suggestions from some of the other answers for this particular question were very helpful, i.e., baskets, plastic crates, etc. The thin plastic cutting boards were a great idea, as the Alera liners are a comparable thickness. I love the Seville and Whitmor lines, but, the grid can present a problem for smaller items. Silver mesh baskets for me. Hope this helps. Liners or not, the shelves are fabulous.

    • does not come with plastic covers but I purchased -some of that carpet runner - plastic sheeting. it comes in sections that fit perfectly on the shelves and cost less than 2 dollars per shelf.

    • It is open; however Walmart does sell something to solve this problem. Alera Shelf Liners For Wire Shelving, 36w x 18d, Clear Plastic, 4 Pack

    • Wire shelves, but I see no problem with putting a thin piece of wood or plastic to make a section for small items, or perhaps plastic bins on the shelves.

    • The wire mesh is open, but I use baskets and storage containers for my small items. It works perfectly for me.

    • No. The plastic sheeting liners are sold separately. There are other things that can be used to keep small items in place. Examples: Trays - Baskets - pieces of wood - plexiglass - cardboard ... (covered with contact paper works, too!) - etc.

    • They are open but I purchased those thin clear inexpensive cutting boards and put them on the two shelves I wanted to put small things on. It only cost me $4 to buy two 2-packs of those at a nearby resturaunt supply store.

    • Yes, you place them where you want them. I have not tried to take one apart and move it as the system has a locking plastic device. I am not sure if it can be moved once placed. I think it may be possible.

    • Sure are. There are groves that hold the peice that holds the shelf. You can put them basically anywhere you want.

    • YES! You get to decide where you want your shelves to be - excluding the top and bottom shelf.

    • The only shelf not really adjustable is the bottom one. I think for stability the top one probably needs to be at the top. But yes, the ones in the middle are adjustable.

    • Yes, you can adjust the heights of the shelves, but only according to where the pre-notched rings on the uprights are. They are placed well, though.

    • Yes. You don't have to put the wheels on to use the unit.

    • You can use the wheels or not. I would suggest using the rubber chair caps under the shelving unit to keep it from sliding.

    • Yes, they are separate pieces that you install. You could not install them and put something else around the base or use the tops that have a buffer piece of plastic on them to protect your floor. The wheels also lock on two of them so it won't roll anywhere.

    • yes - they are screwed in which makes the cart stable - but could be removed easily - might mar the flooring over time?

    • YES! The choice is up to you whether you utilize the wheels or not. They can be used either as stationary or with the wheels movable. The wheels are quite sturdy and "fit" the shelf unit perfectly. I have two units. The larger one is stationary and fits exactly in my pantry. The small one is with the wheels and it's just great. Rolls around easily whenever you want it to - locks when you don't.

    • Once the wheels go on I think it would be pretty hard to get them off, but I'm sure with the right tools you could. The wheels are not necessary to the construction of the piece.
