I have purchased two more of these bookshelves. For my needs they are more than suitable. The slim line and dimensions fit the room they were purchased for, and hold items other than books quite nicely. If overloaded, the shelves will bend downward, but not much. For smaller books, a bookend is required, but that is not a problem. For the price and use and ease of putting these shelves together, you could not choose a better product.

Instructions were on the outside of the box. Assembly was easy. Took a few minutes. The shelves are laminated on ALL six sides. Poles are octagonal in shape and made of sturdy plastic with textured finish, not shiny but not really matte either. One set of caps is about 1/8" (decorative end) above the wood, the other about 11/16". You can place the unit on either set I guess, depending on how much clearance you want underneath. The 11/16" caps are not decorative though, as they're intended to be used at the bottom. Space between shelves is 13-1/16" in height. This is perfect for all of my taller books. Mainstays 3-shelf bookcase is not designed for books taller than about 10.75". The shelves on this unit are half-inch thick and therefore less sturdy than Mainstays bookcases at 3/4-inch thick. Actual usable space between poles is 23" in width, 7.5" between front and back poles. Shelves are 11" deep. Heavier books should be distributed along the sides rather than in the middle. If you put a few on the right, even it out with a few on the left. Overall size 55-1/8" height including caps, 26-3/8" width, 11" depth. Much lighter weight than a traditional bookcase of this size. I use this as a hutch on a 2 foot deep desk. Due to weight and height limitations, I got this instead of the 5-shelf Mainstays bookcase. This unit is made by Sierra. Overall very pleased.

I bought several of these units when they were still in Walmart stores, about 5 or 6 YEARS ago. I am still using them, and adding units now. I have an old house with 9' ceilings. I configure these 7 shelves high and LOAD them down with hardback books, videos, etc. Due to height/weight, I add a twist of wire connected to hooks set in studs on the wall behind for safety, just to insure they don't get pulled over. They look decent assembled in part because they "disappear" into whatever you put on them. I didn't give the features 5 stars due to the following. 1) The shelves are laminated press board. Sturdy, but keep away from water. Wiping with a damp rag is fine, but they will melt if dowsed in a flood. 2) The supports are plastic, again sturdy, but will break at the screw parts if the shelf is moved with weight on it, or even dragged incautiously when empty. I'm buying both for expansion and an extra set for part replacements that have broken over the years. I wasn't always as careful as I should have been. Still, if handled with care in moving, I can attest they do last for years under heavy loads. (Picture note: one 5 shelf unit in the set sits on a small credenza I use for office storage. These also work great as light shelves to put on top of other pieces.)

My husband and I are college students and we have several heavier textbooks that we are looking for a book shelf for. I was wondering if this shelf would be able to hold up the weight of textbooks?

    • A. I put my heaviest textbooks on the bottom shelf-it held about 10 of them- and I put my regular reading books on the higher shelves. They seem pretty sturdy, but I have only had mine for a week, so I am not sure if heavier books would make the shelves sag a bit over time.

    • A. The wood is nice and heavy. I use them for pictures but I have considered putting books on them, I have heavy books. I really think it will hold your textbooks with no problem.

    • A. I'm not sure about the straight shelves (because of the shelves themselves, not the support poles), but the corner unit definitely is.

    • A. I have paperbacks and hard cover books, as well as a VCR (I still like videotapes) on mine. They seem to be holding up well. I'd advise not putting heavier, wider books in the middle, but at the edges.

    • A. We put 50-60 DVD's on each shelf which may weigh 12-15lbs all together. The shelves didn't warp or anything but I don't necessarily believe they could hold up against numerous heavy books. The shelves are only about 3/4 inch thick... I hope this helps.
