Movie Description

The following content was provided by the publisher.

Bob Hoskins ("Mona Lisa," "Who Framed Roger Rabbit," "Enemy At The Gates") stars as Arnie Cole, a lovable Cockney rogue who wants to move up in the fledgling silent-film industry. Prowling for potential investors, Arnie finds haughty, hypercritical Maud (Frances de la Tour, "Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire," "Rising Damp") - and gets far more than he bargained for. While keeping creditors at bay, squabbling actors on task, and an egotistical director under budget, Arnie and Maud try to build a business based on make-believe. In the process, they manage to kindle an unorthodox - but very real - romance. Crackling with droll dialogue and punctuated by moments of true poignancy, Emmy(R)-nominated "Flickers" takes you behind the cameras for a hilarious look at the eccentric entrepreneurs, ambitious actors, and assorted other oddballs who populated the British movie business in the days before talkies. 3-Disc set contains 6 episodes. Episode Description: Disc 1: "Episode One" - Arnie Cole ekes out a living on the ragged edge of the silent-film industry, not to mention the fringes of the law. But he dreams of starting his own production company. Arnie pitches his plan to Maud and Clive, a bourgeois brother and sister who "wash more frequently than the national average." At first, Maud dismisses Arnie's scheme. But circumstances force her to make a counterproposal. "Episode Two" - Desperate for a star to carry his first picture, Arnie teams up with Max Legendre, who manages silent-film comedian Corky Brown. Temperamental Max really wants to direct, and he trades his client's star power for the opportunity offered by Arnie. Along with Corky come the "Singing Brewers," a show-business family better at bickering than at singing. Meanwhile, Maud does a slow burn waiting for Arnie to save her from spinsterhood. Disc 2: "Episode Three" - Burgeoning egos and brushes with the local constabulary threaten the company's first picture. When Corky walks out, Maud conceives of an ambitious plan to save the production - while working on a production of a more maternal nature. And Arnie discovers that literature "has a lot of good stories in it, if you can just cut through all the crap." "Episode Four" - Conflicts arise in the Brewer family when elder daughter Clara sets her sights on stardom and little Dotty begins to grow out of her childhood roles. For their most ambitious production yet, Arnie and Maud recruit Gwendoline Harper - an aging diva whose overbearing personality threatens the troupe's already shaky stability. Then Arnie's former paramour, Letty, returns for a mysterious role that makes Maud very, very apprehensive. Disc 3: "Episode Five" - During the filming of the company's first full-length feature, Arnie bullies everybody in sight, Maud eyes Letty suspiciously, jealousy and ambition tear apart the Brewers, Max's ego swells ever larger, and Gwendoline develops amorous designs on her much younger leading man. All of these simmering problems bubble over at a climactic party that starts with champagne and ends in chaos. "Episode Six" - Corky's downward spiral continues, eventually leading to a tragedy that threatens the company's very existence. When all appears lost, Arnie vows to finish as a winner - but don't expect him to play by Jockey Club rules.
