HP Windows 8.1 laptop

I thought I was making a good move purchasing a laptop with Windows 8.1 because I had previously been using Vista, and not sure if I was ready for Windows 10. The first thing someone should be aware of is that this laptop does NOT have enough RAM to upgrade to Windows 10. Be sure to set it up to allow you to decide which upgrades to install, because it will keep trying to install 10. The next thing to consider when buying a new computer with an older version of Windows is that it has been sitting in a box since it was manufactured (mine was from 2013) and has not gotten any upgrades - i.e. virus protection. After one day on the internet I received a warming from Microsoft that I had several threats and a number to call immediately. Microsoft has technicians who are certified who will work on your computer, and after 2 days and +$300, my computer is now running like a champ. I am still getting adjusted to Windows 8.1, but I love this laptop. Just saying . . .

Despite its lackluster specs, this computer actually performs real world applications like a beast. It is obviously not meant to be a gaming machine, yet it runs Minecraft with all settings turned up all the way at a constant 50-80FPS. The HDD speed read/write is the fastest I've seen in any of the HP 15 and HP Stream line. I can have chrome open with 50 tabs, 3 MS office 365 programs running and I notice no slowdown whatsoever. The ram is upgradable... has touchscreen. CPUBoss shows this quad core processor's performance to almost match the higher end Core i3 machines and even beat it in some aspects. As of April 2015, this is probably the best bang for the buck that you will find in a low end laptop from any vendor.

I am hoping that Dell will forgive me for ever leaving them. I know that this review might not sway you to avoid HP at all costs, but if it turns just one away, my job will have been done. I bought this computer only to have the DVD drive die after just under three months. I called customer service and they were rude, arrogant and very patronizing. I have always heard that Dell had better customer service than HP, but I had to try. They sent me a "new replacement" DVD drive and when I got it out of the package, it was scratched up like someone had tried to take it out with a flat head screwdriver. I sent it back but have not heard from them yet. Hoping to receive a NEW replacement part, but not holding my breath. I usually buy a low cost Dell and have had nothing but great customer service over the years. Never again will I buy an HP and I will be right back to Dell as soon as this garbage dies. And that shouldn't be too long.

I'm very impressed with this laptop! I love the Windows 8.1, it's fast and is great for getting the job done. I watch movies on it all the time and the screen quality is beautiful. Another feature I found really cool was when you have several tabs open, you can simply swipe the screen from the left to easily switch back and forth from your tabs. One thing I did notice on the down side is that when you have several tabs open, the computer gets a little slow. But I think that's pretty normal in computers. Overall great computer and I love mine!

Yet another hit from HP!

As a diehard HP fan, some may find this review to be a bit biased versus the other machine that I'll be referencing, but nevertheless this is my honest opinion of this computer. I'll start with the cons and go on to the pros so that potential buyers will know what they can expect. Cons: - The Intel Pentium processor is terrible, even to be quad core. This isn't HP's fault by any means, but it should be noted that the Pentium Processor line is HIGHLY entry-level. That is to say that you shouldn't expect much more out of this machine than web browsing, video and music playback, and document working. You can play entry level games surely, but background processes will likely be hindered. - The multi-gesture touchpad takes a little bit of getting used to. It's very smooth and sensitive to the touch to the point of where it may actually be OVER-sensitive. For example, one may go to use the two finger scrolling but may inadvertently end up zooming in or out on the page. There is a Synaptics (touchpad manufacturer and driver vendor) control panel built in which allows users to adjust the sensitivity of the touchpad and their mouse cursor, so some may find that a little tweaking may be necessary to give them the best experience when actually using the touchpad and not an external mouse. Pros: - It's a nice looking and sleek computer. Most computers that are entirely plastic look either bulky or very flat and unappealing. This one is quite the opposite. The plastic isn't a cheap, thin kind but has the look and feel of a premium, quality kind. It doesn't appear to scuff easy and the logo on the back isn't too large or too small for the lid. - The keyboard feels nice beneath your finger and keystrokes are nice and fluid. I wrote a review on a 17.3 Acer which I returned in favor of this one and I must say that the difference is entirely evident. The keys take only a mere tap for input and seasoned typists will find no problem in racing over the keyboard. The system function keys are located on the "F(unction)" keys at the top and aren't spread about like some other manufacturers allow. - The screen is nice and vivid for a 15 inch. The colors are exceptionally deep and the screen has adjustable brightness for when you want to relax your eyes a little. On that note, there is almost no eyestrain when looking at the display for prolonged periods. - The touchscreen is very responsive! There is no hesitation when making gestures or clicking or typing via the touchscreen. However, since the display is glossy it's advised you keep a microfiber cleaning cloth at hand to keep it free of fingerprint smudges. - Versus other notebooks in its class and price range, it has exceptionally good audio. It isn't exactly audiophile grade, but it does use premium DTS drivers which include a control panel for you to play with a sound mixer and other miscellaneous audio features. Bass is pretty low and decent while the highs are noticeably crisp. - Aside from the processor being low end, it's actually pretty zippy! For general computing, it gets the job done very quickly. One can have Microsoft Word or Google Chrome up and running and working in only a matter of seconds. There is also relatively few bloatware installed versus other manufacturers, and this helps the computer start and run faster since startup resources aren't used up by wasteful programs. - For the price, it's an excellent computer! This is a nice general laptop that you can carry with you on the fly and expect it to get things done. It won't match a gaming rig, and you probably won't see a DJ roaming around with this particular HP, but if you want something to tote to college or work with you, or just something to have around the house to surf the web and watch movies and TV on, this one will do it for a great price. I purchased this for use as a college student and have been thoroughly impressed, as I have with all HP products, with it's battery life, portability, and speed. As the title states, this is yet another hit from hp!
