This two disc set includes a CD with two bonus tracks "Domestic, Light and Cold" (duet with Cody Canada) and "She Won't Choose Me." Bonus DVD includes making of the video "Lot of Leavin' Left To Do" in stereo and surround sound and three bonus audio tracks in surround sound.
Dierks Bentley came to the major label arena fully developed. There were no clunky newbie moments on his self-titled Capitol Records debut. Bentley, well-versed in the musical language of Merle Haggard and George Jones, arrived on the scene (after years of behind-the-curtain work) and demanded to be heard. The results? Three hit singles and a platinum album to hang on his wall. Not bad for a kid from Arizona.
Modern Day Drifter picks up right where the curly-headed singer/songwriter's first album left off. The honky tonk door gets blown off its hinges right out of the gate, with the old-school romp "Lot Of Leavin' Left To Do." Bentley warns a wanting woman that she better not fall for him unless she's willing to let him go. The singer continues to smoke the tires on "Cab Of My Truck," a pedal-to-the-floor country-rocker with copious amounts of fiddle and Dobro. The white tank top reference near the end of the track will bring smiles to the faces of the Bentley faithful.
"Domestic, Light And Cold" shows Dierks was paying attention while on tour with George Strait. 'King' George comes to mind as Bentley swaggers his way through a swinging drinking song. The singer gives a cheating woman the boot on the shuffling "So So Long" and even offers to buy her one last shot before he hits the road. Bluegrass legend Del McCoury and his band make a guest appearance on the plucky "Good Man Like Me." Bentley, who spent years absorbing bluegrass music at the famous Station Inn (Nashville), shines in a gritty vocal performance.
The stripped down "Come A Little Closer" aches from the inside out. Bentley pleads with his woman to come to him so together they can forsake the madness of the world for one night of soul-soothing passion. The moody "Settle For A Slowdown" gives it all away in the title. The singer waits desperately for the glow of brake lights as his woman leaves him stranded in a rainstorm. "Good Things Happen" finds Bentley, pre-rainstorm breakup, at peace in the arms of his lover. "Gonna Get There Someday," a beautiful but haunting track, has a surprise twist at the end.
If you like your country hard, then Modern Day Drifter belongs in your CD player.
