Movie Description

The following content was provided by the publisher.

Folks In Black Rock have their own way of welcoming mysterious, one-armed stranger John J. Macreedy. He's welcome to leave. Or they'll make sure he leaves in a pine box. Two-time Academy Award(R) winner Spencer Tracy (Best Actor, (1937 - "Captains Courageous", 1938 - "Boys Town") a 1955 Best Actor Oscar(R) nominee for this film plays World War II veteran Macreedy, who keeps his own counsel about why he's come to Black Rock and who keeps his wits about him when confronted with threats and violence. Director John Sturges ("The Great Escape") ramps up the tension while revealing Macreedy's mission and the town's grim secret. Robert Ryan, Walter Brennan, Ernest Borgnine and Lee Marvin are among the town's thugs and lap dogs. "I'm half horse, half alligator," one says. They'll find Macreedy is even tougher stuff.

Customer Product Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5★ by 3reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5★ by Spencer Tracy's last truly great dramatic role Spencer Tracy walks into the middle of a mystery and finds himself trapped in the desert town of Black Rock, harassed and confounded by a superior supporting cast that includes Robert Ryan, Lee Marvin, and Ernest Borgnine (who gets thoroughly trounced by the one-armed Tracy in a classic screen fight). The story is a modern day Western set in the years after WW II, tautly directed by John Sturges, who expertly juggles the aforementioned cast in addition to Dean Jaggers, Walter Brennan, John Ericsson and Anne Francis. One of Tracy's last truly great dramatic roles that scored him a Best Actor nomination. Robert Ryan's smoothly menacing villain is a perfect foil for Tracy in their many confrontations. This is a not to be missed classic film noir with a superlative cast, script, and director beautifully remastered on DVD. Highly recommended! 12/23/2011
